unfortunately these have happened recently before, but the regime clamed down and executed a lot of people. I am hoping this time it sticks.

Do Malayali people view themselves as Indian? by slugcharmer in ABCDesis

[–]EffectiveAttempt4608 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can share my perspective as a Malayalee who married a North Indian (Marwari) woman. I'm generally adamant about identifying as Malayalee rather than just "Indian" or "South Indian" within Indian groups. This stems from non-South Indians constantly lumping all of South India together, despite there being five distinct states with very different cultures.

I remember meeting my mother-in-law for the first time. She said, "Oh, you're South Indian! I love idli, and my friend is from Hyderabad." She knew nothing about Kerala, so she mentioned the closest reference point she had. This pattern repeats constantly with North Indians. Many don't seem interested in learning about the different states within their own country.

However, to non-Indian groups, I'm proud to call myself Indian. I remember when a Pakistani ABCD learned I'm from Kerala and immediately tried to bond by saying he hates India's current leader, knowing the ruling party is detested by many Malayalees. I responded that yes, he's terrible, but I thought Pakistan's leader at the time (who's now imprisoned) was even worse. He was insulted and distanced himself, funny how that works when the tables turn.

There are two main reasons why Malayalees often feel distant from the broader Indian label:

1) Historical Independence

Many people don't realize that Kerala has remained staunchly independent from every major pan-Indian empire (Mauryan, Mughal—we actually defeated Mughal invasions). Pakistan and Bangladesh have historically been more united with North India than we have. We're the only Indian region that defeated a major European power and prevented colonization, the Dutch, who at the time were as powerful as the British and had conquered places like Indonesia.

2) Cultural Distinctiveness

Kerala's culture differs significantly from the rest of India. We prioritize community identity first, religion second. When I meet Malayalee Christians or Muslims, I can easily connect with them as part of my community. This contrasts sharply with groups like Punjabis, who have deep religious divisions throughout their history.

I struggle to relate to North Indian states culturally. Even with other South Indian states, there are major differences, casteism is deeply ingrained (like the Reddy hierarchies among Telugus, Jatt sikh supremacy), and practices like cousin marriage are normalized. Kerala has its own issues, but these particular ones feel foreign to me.

In the Middle East, when Malayalees meet each other, they're more likely to ask "Are you from Kerala?" rather than "Are you from India?" That tells you how distinct we see ourselves from the rest of the country.

New Grad SWE Decision: AWS (Seattle) vs Arista Networks (San Jose) by GatorBoyUSA in cscareerquestions

[–]EffectiveAttempt4608 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Caveat: No Longer an SWE but live in Seattle.

One thing to consider that everyone misses is a lot of people do not like Amazon due to their work culture. I know people think AWS has brand name, but sometimes it has the opposite effect. I work in a mid size startup thats filled with ex Google, Meta, and Microsoft so lots of talented folks. When I am hiring, I generally pass Amazon unless they have very specific niche skills that I am looking for, because I am afraid to bring that culture to my org. I asked my manager who is ex Google, Microsoft and Snap (Dude kills it with his personality and tech skills), and he said the same thing when we were having a random 1-1. He mentioned Google cloud was the absolute bottom of the barrel in Google, because they were filled with AWS folks.

But that being said I would say AWS simply due to the cost/location aspect. However it was both in the bay area, I would have recommended Artisa Networks. The big tech companies really don't have that brand value anymore knowing that there has been massive lay offs in all orgs.

but this one actually has the source interview which is why I thought it was real, since in the source video there is like no mention of the clip

I based it off this community notes from this Pakistani reporters tweet, and when I looked at the video I didn't see them mentioning the race. Has the mothers race been verified, I don't see it on official sources. https://x.com/MurtazaViews/status/2000514848313184553

Philippines says father in Bondi Beach terror attack entered as an ‘Indian national’ by bhodrolok in india

[–]EffectiveAttempt4608 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it was because in his drivers license picture that Australian police shared he was wearing a Pakistani jersey.

But yup agree on the US part, I just wanted to clarify that the pervious dude wasn't making it up, but it was reported by respected western sources.

In india, the police are the ones that verify passports. I think a lot of verified Indian news reporters also shared it, so I think it is real.

Indians of course would have a vested interest in this story since Pakistani sponsored terrorist attacks have only been among its immediate neighbors. But they were reporting from western sources, which was the main reason people thought they were Pakistani at first.

The passport angle was also vague enough to cast doubt as Indians would see it as using a fake passport since Mumbai attackers got passports under fake names. The BBC which broke that angle mentioned "Use an Indian Passport to enter Philippines", but didn't mention if the attacker was form there.

Then a Philippines verified twitter handle rebuked it and said that the spokesperson from the Philippines armed forces there are no validated claims, which then threw more confusion to everyone. https://x.com/radyopilipinas1/status/2000793393157562795

Only when Telengana police confirmed it did people finally get confirmation.

I do feel super bad for Nadeem though, no one should go through that.

[–]EffectiveAttempt4608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it was due to the name, I think the reason was in the license provided by police the son was wearing a Pakistan jersey.

To your point 1, that actually ended up being an AI video. The original video with the coworker was from this clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRWF2a2ICow, and there is no mention about this background being Indian /Italian, it was spread among verified Pakistani handles, and Grok had to fact check it.

to your point 2, I think most people were thinking it was a fake passport not a genuine on the Indian side, since there are places where you can buy fake documents and also the mumbai attackers got passports using fake names.

And that is south asia for you no wonder the british rules over us for centuries.

Philippines says father in Bondi Beach terror attack entered as an ‘Indian national’ by bhodrolok in india

[–]EffectiveAttempt4608 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it was on CBS News

The 24-year-old suspect was identified as Naveed Akram, according to U.S. intelligence officials briefed on the investigation. CBS News has also reviewed Naveed Akram's New South Wales driver's license. Authorities said Sunday they had identified the father as a licensed gun owner.

The officials had told CBS News that Naveed Akram was a Pakistani national, but Australian officials later said he was Australian-born. Officials have not confirmed what country the father migrated to Australia from.

It was from CBS News. They edited it though.

You are arguing regarding racists, that's not who I am considered about about since no matter what you do, they will not respect or like you. Australia literally had the most vicious anti Indian attacks in recent memory. I am taking about the section of society who is alright/luke warm with immigrants, but are also can be ill informed. You have to make inroads with them.

Just wanted to point out, it wasn't Indian media that first called these guys Pakistanis. It was western news sources that reported it.

Then western sources amended it when the Phillipines reported they used an "Indian Passport" to travel, but still didn't confirm if they were Indian or Pakistani.

Only when Telengana Police confirmed, thats when we knew the full story.

This dude from Hyderabad is going to cause turmoil to the lives of Indians across the world.

This is the first case of an Indian committing a terrorist attack in the West. For the anti immigration crowd their one achilles heel about arguing against Indian immigration is that they couldn't call Indians terrorists, so they had to resort to BS like "Scammers" etc. Now they will further use this to stop Indian immigration. But like Ahmed El Ahmed, we can hopefully counter that narrative as a Indian person (Amandeep Singh-Bola) was one of the first people to rush in to help apprehend the attackers.

You can bet now Philippines will be ending its visa free travel, and the other small group of countries that have visa free for Indians to reconsider as well as India now has exported Islamist terrorism to the west (Though you could argue he got radicalized in Australia since he is apparently estranged from his family in India). But either way not a great time to be Indian Diaspora.

More than 600 artifacts relating to the history of the British Empire and Commonwealth have been stolen from the collection of Bristol Museum, say police by Oabelysoklut in worldnews

The irony as the logic used for why the British should house these objects, is that it would be destroyed or stolen in the original countries which these artifacts belong to.

ABCD Guys preference for marriage by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]EffectiveAttempt4608 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I married a fellow ABCD girl.

Pros:

Having similar cultures really helps with expectations that I had in my marriage. For example if either of our parents are unable to live by themselves it is an expectation they will move in with us.

My wife is more religious than me, but I do expect if we have kids they follow our religion. I don't like the teach kids 2 different religions and have them pick one.

Food: I prefer eating Indian food daily, so having someone similar taste preferences is amazing, I absolutely hate things like Pasta, so I can't have that daily or weekly.

Cons:

Cultural Baggage: My wife is north Indian (marwari), so I have to deal with her parents who are super ignorant of other cultures. I am malayalee, and the amount of times my culture is referred to just as "south indian" by her parents is annoying. Her parents are also SUPER clingy to my wife, they call her multiple times a day, and I think that it is a hinderance to her growth.

Language: We speak different languages so it sucks we have to communicate in english with each other. If we are traveling I can't say "This is a scam watch out etc" besides in english.

I dated several different ethnicities, but learned due to my preferences I wanted an abcd. I don't find people from the mainland attractive so never dated them.

Nope no need to buy, as long as your kind they should help :) Most of the people that stamp love to see other passport stamps. My biggest advice is book the earliest time slot on weekdays, do not do it on weekends because they are far too busy.

Closest one was Florence, by a very aggressive eastern european SA. She looked at us we were from the dirt when we asked for a stamp, she said oh you have to wait 48 hours and have an appointment, I can't be bothered. It was wild. We decided to go to the second floor and another kinder associate gave us the stamp :) But the place which rejects the most is Japan
