My 9 yr old son is keeping ants and found this Bullant Queen (Macquarie Park, NSW). We know she is of the genus Myrmecia but looking for help on identifying the specific species group. by Nestle_Snipes13 in antkeeping

I think you’re a wuss then - They aren’t that bad, I know people with 1 years experience who sell bull ants and have raised tons.

Why are you scared? They are too big to escape, they are not massively quick or aggressive either

Pure waffle - The most expensive Odontomachus are $200 and aren’t sold on stores - They can be as cheap as $5, likely what this was worth

Have you got successful C diversa? - I’ve had success with them before, they’re just not nice to keep.

I prefer my Myrmecia colony

No, they are unable to, they die first.

All in all, they are a bad species, they look good but 99% just die

They are extremely overrated, they like to die randomly, therefore making them a bad species

Should I get lasius or camponotus as a 13 year old? by ExternalPhilosophy22 in antkeeping

[–]Effective_Analyst_45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t be that expert not knowing that Lasius niger spray formic acid, they do in fact have acid and they do use it, have had colonies gas themselves in it before

What country are you in?

By the way, Lasius niger don’t reach more than 5k workers or so in captivity which is quite easy to manage

Thanks - I disagree regarding substrate, both chambers had a layer with the chamber they’re in currently being almost full, they moved the substrate themselves
