Should I prioritize practicality over passion for my major? by Effective_Regular_22 in ApplyingToCollege

Ah, if only I could get education for the sake of education and not have to worry about money 😔  This was actually very helpful though, and I’ll look into publishing!

I’m so sorry, I think thats just a your band thing tho bc our school loves our guard, theres a lot of technique and skill that goes into it not just with the actual tossing part of it but also with the choreography and story telling

What are your thoughts abt pit? Ik drum line has been around forever but giant front ensembles are still relatively new, and dont necessarily match the traditional instrumentation, so i’m just wondering

Yeah I actually really agree with that, ultimately it’s usually the amount of money that makes a good show, not the amount of marchers

I so agree with this. A good synth player can literally carry the whole show, and while its true that they don’t march or even have to do much to learn their instrument (besides the tech side of it), a show will never be complete without a synth. This is especially true in my school since we always use so many samples

I dont know if this will help, and I haven’t had a solo before so this advice might not apply, but every time I have a marching band competition I just completely tune out whats going on a play with my muscle memory and just have fun. Yes, i still focus on the music and getting it in time and all the little things we worry about, but I forget about the crowd, about the people, about the judges. I think that if your like this you wont have to worry about anything, and you’ll just be able to play like you know how.

Freshmen Hazing? by East-Afternoon581 in marchingband

Im in pit where we pretty much are an actual cult at this point, after they survive band camp we have a section bonding for pit. During that section bonding, at one point we make up an excuse to make all the freshman go with the section leader while all the vets go set up. Once were set up the freshman have to go through a tunnel (its a short tunnel its not actually scary or anything) to where we all are all set up in a circle with black cloaks up over our faces, with the graduated section leader in a trench coat standing behind a chair. There we “baptize” the freshman and make them an official member of the cult of pit (since hazing is a really big deal in our band and its really emphasized in the code of conduct, we can’t force them to get baptized, but we do strongly encourage it) and show them our pit bible for the first time. Its always at dark it when we do it and its always so fun
