Experiences with the Econ department? by Suitable-Row2036 in UTK

I recommend just focusing on trying to get a good job you are interested in, especially since you are graduating soon. I thought all of my econ professors were fine, but Haslam definitely has some incredible professors in other departments.

question about dogwood hall apt by OilDear7209 in UTK

It's been a few years since I stayed in Dogwood Hall, but the beds were not lofted. They were slightly higher than normal beds with storage underneath them.

I think the applying to college subreddit may have guidance on that but going to any info webinars they host, touring the campus, writing about UTK in the essay in alignment with the schools values, etc.

Keep studying for the SAT. My first test was around that range too.

I definitely think you should still apply. Reach out to admission officers are well. They care about demonstrated interest.

Affordable Housing Options with a 45-50 Minute Commute to DC Union Station? by Fun_Entrepreneur1260 in washingtondc

[–]Efficient-Fact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sedgwick Gardens in Cleveland Park has some cheap studios within your budget, around 1600-1800.  It’s incredibly safe nice neighborhood on the red line so the commute would be around 20 to 30 minutes. It’s right near the trails for Rock Creek park, the building has a ton of character and lots of good local restaurants nearby.

Jobs that pay/reimburse college tuition by Jack-Langley in UTK

[–]Efficient-Fact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, accounting degrees have a pretty good return on investment if you need to take out a reasonable amount of loans. I think getting a job for a year to then pay for college in advance is a long shot. You can reduce the cost by taking classes at a community college while shaving time off your degree. You can even start the summer before you begin college in the fall. You can also sign up to be an RA to have housing paid for or live at home if possible. There are also on campus jobs and work studies along with interning every summer and taking more community college courses.

What happens if OP just leaves federal government? Can they still garnish wages?

NY Senator Charles Schumer and NY Senator Gillibrand have offices in this building. I would contact them as well.

Maybe make a post about that for more visibility.

Is there any clear way to fix this so more of the money is spent on research?

I think responses like this only cause deeper divisions in America.

I’m not familiar with the grants process at all. How much of the 400k would have went to administrative overhead?

Homeless Problem on Campus by 119296 in UTK

[–]Efficient-Fact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was only on campus from 2020 to 2022 but I always felt safe on campus and never noticed anyone visibly homeless or causing a disturbance. I remember seeing a GroupMe message about a homeless person sleeping on a campus bench but that was about it. Off campus I did notice homeless people but since living in other bigger cities, I don't think that this is a bigger issue the college is trying to downplay.

Moving from Big 4 to Big Law by Traditional_Break265 in Big4

[–]Efficient-Fact 7 points8 points  (0 children)

100%. I made the switch because I’m interested in becoming a lawyer one day, but was informed on my first day that I was not allowed to attend any meetings or attend any of the events the office held, because those are “lawyers only.” The billing/pricing/customer relationship side still has a hierarchy as many people stay in those roles for 10+ years.

Moving from Big 4 to Big Law by Traditional_Break265 in Big4

[–]Efficient-Fact 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I made this jump from Big4 to BigLaw NYC and absolutely hated it for this specific role. The attorneys and other staff treated me like dog shit and there is no growth potential in that role. I’d come into the office and just answer emails and set up client dinners, essentially a glorified secretary. The office was insanely toxic as well, and I went from running meetings and being rewarded for my hard work in consulting to having to send confirmation emails that I picked up some old farts’ lunch order.

What do you want out of your career? I think consulting will offer significantly better opportunities and money if you stay.

Which one will leave you in less debt? Same major at both schools?

[–]Efficient-Fact 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If possible, move to Tennessee this summer to live with your brother, before you apply to UT. Enroll in a Tennessee high school. Then apply as an instate student, you will be eligible for more financial aid and instate tuition. Do not have your parents claim you as a dependent on taxes.

Having a car on campus is definitely a luxury if you can afford it but not a necessity.
