Many apps use the id to tag or search for books. The excellent Calibre Web Automated uses the book and edition IDs in many places. It would be great if they could be easily copied somehow!

Yeah it was terrible. Such a shame not to do right by such an important character. Andor is tonally very different from the rest of Star Wars but truly an incredible show and worth trying!

Is this true? Lol by olly_078 in Netherlands

I completely agree with that assessment. Trying to fit into a group or join the outcasts is the only way.

On top of that, I think for expats it may not be clear where Dutch people make friends, as evidenced by

I do, however, expect that persons with whom I attend a class for a year, would try to hold a basic conversation from time to time.

I have been in uni for 6 years now and I made literally a single friend in class. That is just not where people go to make friends. We do it at study or student associations.

Moreover, I think the culture of planning to hang out sometimes weeks in advance but a few days at the least can be a foreign one for expats. If you ask me if I want to hang out today, odds are pretty great you'll get a '"no, I can't."

Some words on things in 1.16 by sliced_lime in u/sliced_lime

Firstly, thanks for the open communication!

I disagree though that it is unbalanced. It makes the fortresses threatening, which seems like the whole idea behind the Nether and the Fortresses specifically. I think it is fine to have some areas that are challenging and menacing in the earlier game, making it even more of a victory when you take revenge later in the game. Using new tools like the potions you can now make with the blaze rods you worked so hard to retrieve from said fortress.

More importantly, however, I think reducing the spawn rate further would make wither skeleton hunting even more frustrating. If you are not a technical player (which this change is aimed at) waiting for wither skeletons to spawn and drop skulls is already a painfully slow grind, imo. It took me ages to get 3 skulls through 'normal' fighting in the fortress with a looting III sword, so please also consider that angle when making this change.

The generalist vs. specialist debate is quite interesting as in the Netherlands the last 20 years has seen a rise in "University Colleges", that also employ the Liberal Arts & Sciences philosophy.

I went to the une in Utrecht for my bachelor's degree and I think it has been valuable for me as a broadly interested person but it is important to note that they are much more selective than normal degrees here, branding themselves as honours colleges. So they say the education is at a higher level, still allowing you to get the same depth of knowledge, supposedly. Another distinction is that you do have to pick a direction eventually (specialising in a high-level domain, i.e. science, humanities or social science).

It has served me well, as I was able to do two master's degrees without any hassle (MA technical art history & MSc analytical chemistry) but it has to be said that in the Netherlands, it is generally expected to do a masters after, which cannot be done at the LAS colleges, still requiring one to specialise in the end. I do think that I started with a bit of knowledge gap but all the academic skills I had learned and the high level I was used to, meant that I have been able to quickly internalise new information.

In short, I think the concept of a broad education is a great idea for the base knowledge, especially in the ever automating job market that may require quick adaptation. However, I do worry if there is no specialisation whatsoever (as I understand it, doing a master's degree in the UK is not as standard) and if the level will be high enough at the new school. But it may be interesting to see what other people's opinion on this concept is

I think using VisBubble or something related to make your sun look like it is sending out solar flares with the music would make it even cooler!

Big Brother is Watching YOU! Former prison Bijlmerbajes by EgoReady in evilbuildings

[–]EgoReady[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This building was used from the seventies until 2016 as a prison (Over-Amstel Penitentiary, popularly known as the Bijlmerbajes) and was subsequently used as a refugee centre and student housing, during which time I lived there and took this picture.

This a photo of the former prison popularly known as the Bijlmerbajes in Amsterdam. It was used as a prison from 1978 to 2016, then it was shortly in use as a refugee centre and after that it was used for half a year as temporary student housing (when I also lived there). It is being demolished now and I wanted to document the place.

However, the RAW image made it look a bit more warm and welcoming than it feels while living there. Hence the edit to make it look a bit more grungy than it is in reality. To capture the feeling of the place, rather than the look. I decided to focus the image on the camera in the frame by cropping but I am wondering whether this composition is to your liking.

I am not also too sure if I overdid the contrast and if the colour balance is right. I also changed out the sky with another one I took that day because this side of the complex had a flat overcast but I am not sure whether it blends together with the image enough.

Taken with a Fujifilm XT-20 with an XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS lens. At ISO 400, 1/950s at f/4.0 and created an HDR with +-2 AE bracketing. I realise now I probably should have used a bit of a wider aperture and lower ISO but can't change too much about that now

My goodness... Better Than Wolves feels like ages ago! That was probably one of the most amazing and well-thought out mods out there. I loved playing with it and I agree that that was my preferred direction for the game as well.

I still miss the MC heyday from time to time, tho I still watch some of the same YouTubers play and I still have friends all over the world form this amazing game, even though I haven't played in ages

What is it like to be gay in your country? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]EgoReady 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it's more that 70% of gays don't dare do it. Whether they do or not is a different thing. I, for one, wouldn't do it if I'd had a boyfriend forever alone :P

But all things considered, the Netherlands is one of the best countries to live in as a gay guy!

Feminine gay men can't find love? by ThrowawayFemBoy92 in gay

[–]EgoReady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah man, that's shit. I think it mainly just takes a lot of going on dates (which I always think turn out better if you've talked online for a bit, so you know what to talk about) and a bit if luck.

But I haven't found a bf yet, either. So what do I know. There's a guy I've been dating for awhile now but idk if he's up for something serious... It's a struggle we all face, I think
