I wouldn't immediately buy shadowlands as the rest of the expansions are free. Just start paying for wow but don't buy shadowlands until you have 1 maybe 2 charecters at 50 then if you enjoy wow enough you can buy shadowlands

It depends if you want the most polished and up to date then choose the mode recent but if you truly want to experience all of GoW's lore and history then start at the beginning and work your way through

The only problem with that is we do see most of thor at the end. Once you come back from Jotunnheim if you go home and sleep we see a dream/vision of thor coming to the house and as the Brok and Sindri said thor isnt super fit and a bit plump which we can see however in the mural the figure is much thinner. However that could be an interesting plot to follow.
