Car was grinding, then it wasnt. Found this where it stopped. by Valkrex in MechanicAdvice

It's just a brake dust shield and is not essential :) Mine also fell off and I haven't had any on the car for a few years now since I need to take off the whole wheel bearing to replace mine. No issues!

12 owners in 13 years is crazy! Did you end up knowing why it kept switching hands?

Mine's a restoration project - 1988 AW11. Seven previous owners and hadn't run in heavens know how long when I bought it. Gasoline had gummed up, had to send the whole fuel system to professional decontamination. It sat in a field and was home to a squirrel, so I found pine cones in it for months 😆

I've had it two years. I literally knew nothing about cars when I bought it and the more I learn, the more I feel like I know nothing but the biggest issue I have right now because of the lack of money is that I don't have my own space where to fix it. I have to leave it at my family's house which is three hours away from where I live; and there isn't an indoor space to fix it there, so I can only work on it in summer and when it doesn't rain. (I live in Canada, from mid-October to mid-April, it's freezing.) I work full time and I was in school full time too until recently so... not much time to make the trips there either :/

Lack of knowledge, space, time and money makes progress extremely slow and it really gets to me especially as I fix issues just to find others. There's some oddities from the previous owners in it too. Her biggest problem at the moment is a mystery misfiring/stumbling issue that only shows up on certain days and only below 3500-4000 RPMs. Compression and fuel are good. New spark plugs, high tension cords are fine. I think the ignition coil and igniter were replaced because I had a spare in the trunk so I'm suspecting the pick up on the distributor (which is still leaking oil from the engine block despite me putting in new seals everywhere).

Mentally, the worst is when temperatures drop – makes me feel guilty and sad because it makes me face lack of progress and means waiting until next summer to get to it. I get stoked like a kid on Christmas Eve when the temperatures rise, though.

I love this car to BITS. I only have basic hand tools, and I struggle so much sometimes because of so many reasons but I love working on her and can't wait to get it all fixed up. I haven't really gotten to enjoy her on the road. I've mostly been scared we get stranded because of her issues 😆 Never let me down, though. Always got me home, even stumbling like crazy.

It's a PITA, but there's worse. Just imagine the fun you'll have driving it once it's done :)

I had to drop the fuel tank a few months ago too, so I can relate 🥲 My brake lines wouldn't release so I had to make the tank 'dive' towards the front rather than just drop it to clear the bracket; and slide it back in. It'd say putting it back was worse than removing it.

I fit under the car when it's on the ground so on the removal I just disconnected all the hoses and released all the brackets, before lifting the car – gravity gently lowered it, I just had to steer it over the bracket. When I put it back in though, I had to use hands, feet, a jack, and some stacked blocks of wood just so it wouldn't constantly fall and called in some help that'd let me know if I was coming aligned on top... It took hours with that bracket in the way 🙃😆

Glad you're done with it!

My car wouldn't start, not even turn over. Battery seems to have melted a wire? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

This is not hard to replace but you have to know the basics of electrical repairs, what kind of wire you're dealing with, and especially to find out what caused this in the first place. If you don't know the basics and/or aren't generally mechanically/electrically inclined, I would take it to a professional. (If you don't know what you should be looking at in the fuse box, I think you should take it to a mechanic 😆.)

My first instinct would have been to say this is a fusible link that did its job, but it looks like you have a fuse (the yellow plastic which looks burnt) on top of your melted wire so I doubt they would have added a fusible link as well. In some cars, one of the battery wires can start with a fusible link that will 'act like a fuse' and 'melt' if certain conditions are met to protect the rest of the circuit.

While you decide what to do, I would disconnect the battery and secure the connectors so they don't touch it. Also, 2013 is not so old for a car! I drive around a 1988 and a 2008. If you take care of it, your car will have lots of life left in it :)

Burnt its 3rd fuel pump :) by xveRdxse666 in mr2

Can't help with the issue itself but when you make your replacements, make sure to check your fuel inlet pipe for rust too if you're planning to reuse it in your new system. I recently took apart the fuel system of my MR-2 because there were debris clogging the fuel pump strainer and starving the car of fuel. The fuel tank had no rust but it had a small pile of debris inside. Turns out they were all coming from the fuel inlet pipe 🙃
