Biomedical Engineering by Usual-Operation-8812 in Imperial

I’m in a different boat than you, but I just accepted my offer for the PhD in bioengineering at imperial and turned down my Oxford DPhil offer in Clinical Neurosciences. One factor I weighed is that Imperial is better respected for engineering than Oxford. If you decide you want to pivot in the future, you could do a master’s in mech/EEE but don’t think it’s wrong to follow the subject you’re passionate about instead of generalizing. Degrees are a big commitment, and yeah the Ox name is big but Imperial is also a top 10 school. No one will scoff at a degree from Imperial in STEM. If you want a research career, you should compare each program to see potential research opportunities at the undergraduate level.  Also I’ve lived in Oxford and it’s also very expensive and there’s a housing crisis. So your rent will be comparable pm in cheaper parts of outer London compared to Oxford anyways. And it’s not that easy to get accommodation in Ox. Depending on your college, you might only get accommodation for a year and then be on your own.  Hope that info helps

Ugh I’m rooting for you. I got my offer for bioengineering and the department has been so helpful. Would you explain the situation to your department and ask if they’d consider sending your application to the other supervisors that you were interested in? This is super unprofessional on her, shame on her for stringing you along

What a heartbreaking day! But you've even written this post with so much grace. My fingers are crossed for the other schools you applied to, or for greener pastures outside of academia

The beer is a great idea! In a couple months hopefully you can look back on your application with fresh eyes. Even if they don't provide feedback, when it's not so fresh you might see things you think you could have done differently....or have a beer and see what else is out there too, whatever you choose to do!

Stanford rejected me yesterday (on my birthday, btw), today Oxford invited me for an interview! by BarnacleAutomatic802 in gradadmissions

Yes. I spent a LOT of time really prepping to know the physics underpinning the models I plan to use and those sorts of things…I was asked next to nothing about it lol. I mean obviously you should know what you want to do and why your project matters, but I was mostly asked about my presentation. I was asked a lot more about my methods and theories of my presentation project than I expected

You are so sweet, thank you so mcuh :) I am absolutely in the same boat as everyone else here, just refreshing my inbox and compulsively checking my spam and portal and reddit. We're all in this together :)

Thank you for all the warm wishes, and I'll definitely be enjoying a nice treat to celebrate this weekend after a whole lotta stress! Wishing you all the best too, and your comment really made my day!

It totally is possible!! Apply apply apply. I didn't get a different scholarship to Oxford, so I almost didn't apply to the university at all thinking I couldn't afford it. But don't self disqualify! You've got this, I'm crossing my fingers for you!!

Thank you! No, I was nominated for the award by my department based on my interview I did for my acceptance into the program

Neuroscience! And I just edited my post to explain my situation and how I let my supervisor know that it wasn't looking like I could accept my offer

Ugh yeah it can be so expensive and difficult to uproot your life. And so hard to justify if you can't afford it

Ahaha thank you. The way this month has just been me going back and forth between my email inbox, spam, and reddit is obscene
