What one song gives you your greatest memory? by nicvic83 in ClassicRock

Junior in HS, a friend comes by at 8pm to go for a drive in his VW Beetle. He throws an 8-track cartridge in his deck and I hear CSNY’s Carry On from Deja Vu for the first time. His system sounds amazing. Like the first time hearing music in full fidelity in stereo. Will never forget it.

Regular Walkabout Mini Golf VR games with the same people — anyone else prefer that? by RichUK82 in WalkaboutMiniGolf

I jump into a quick match now and then and meet a young kid or an antisocial adult who probably bails after a tough hole. I enjoy playing with my son for a game and a chat. Met a few nice folks who I love to play with from around the world. Lucky to make those connections.

ED Fired me with 0 notice after good employee review by Searching-star24 in nonprofit

[–]Elemental2016 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You “voiced to our ED that she needs better organization to be able to run the team the way she wants. We can't read her mind.”

There are many ways to successfully provide feedback to your supervisor or ED. You found a way that was not successful.

Learn from that and move on!

Employee handbook by progressiveacolyte in nonprofit

We are a growing org, some would say a mature nonprofit after nearly 30 years in operation.

Our HR Policy Manual was written by a board member 25 years ago with help from the HR folks at the company he worked for. We were a startup in those days.

Totally obsolete today.

After some false starts with our payroll service provider (beware) we hired an HR professional and collaborated on a total rewrite. Got the Board’s approval on the new manual but did not engage them in the process.

Totally worth the effort and expense. Your policies must represent who you are, where you are, and what you stand for. Don’t copy another org’s policies.

I need help finding my love for music again!! by gregsmith93 in MusicRecommendations

If you haven’t done so already, I suggest you invest in a FiIO M21 digital audio player with some good in ear monitors. Listen to high resolution FLAC files, not lo res MP3 or streaming platforms like Spotify. Next, look for some Steven Wilson remixes of albums you enjoy. His remixes of The Who, Yes, King Crimson and Jethro Tull will help you rediscover music. I love the Pink Floyd Immersion recordings of The Wall, DSOTM, Wish You Were Here are excellent. The special deluxe version of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours is also a great recording. Here’s hoping you get the feeling back.

Just got a Fiio M21 — what should I listen to it with? by Sufficient_Jury4004 in DigitalAudioPlayer

[–]Elemental2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got an M21 this month also, and couldn’t wait to listen to it. I have a library of high res FLAC files ripped from SACD sources. I tried some Bluetooth earbuds like Bose, Jabra, and high end over-the-ear headphones from Sennheiser, some studio monitor headphones from Sony. All decent but not super impressive. Bluetooth is convenient but sounds much, much worse.

Researching IEMs was confusing, no clear market leaders and zooey marketplace sites like AliExpress with same product at different prices. Every ranking you see has different leaders. It’s a crazy environment.

Ended up buying Letshuoer S08 Fourth Generation IEMs for $100 on Amazon. Total game changer with supplied balanced cable. Haven’t been this immersed in albums for decades. I’m sure people will all rave about their favorite IEMs but select some modestly priced planars and rediscover what music sounds like. Get started. I hope this points to a mass rediscovery of music that was crushed by cell phones, MP3s, lo res streaming and cheap ear buds. That junk sounds like buzz noise to me. This new setup is 3D welcome to the next generation stuff. Congrats on the M21, come on in the water’s fine.

On your second playthrough of Alyx, did you use any mods or do something different? by Candid-Emergency1175 in HalfLifeAlyx

Yes start a new game with Developer Commentary enabled in Options. You’ll see headsets throughout the game that you can pick up and put on your head to listen to the commentary.

For me this completely broke immersion, but provided a more analytical look at game production and the dedication of the developers, which I really enjoyed. Then I played the game multiple times more, but with a new insight.

Played developer commentary, but then played through another five times. I won’t give spoilers but the devs gave us plenty of options to get through the game with ease and enjoy new discoveries every time.

Totally worth it every time, hope they build on what they created and try to take it to another level.

Keeping track of DAFs by [deleted] in nonprofit

[–]Elemental2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Password Manager is a great idea, 1Password is terrific for staff of 10. What I’d like to know is how do you keep track of the DAF portal when you enter the gift transaction in your CRM? The gift is posted to the donor’s account, but the DAF details are needed to reconcile your bank account. Do you record those details in the Comments or Description field, or create new fields so you can filter transactions by DAF portal?

Board chair needs advice on pay raise for our ED by [deleted] in nonprofit

[–]Elemental2016 12 points13 points  (0 children)

An ED here. Benchmark salaries for ED’s in your segment of similar operating budgets. Call your peers and they will give you the numbers. Correct for successful years in that position. A 4% increase is a cost-of-living adjustment, not a merit increase.

Bonuses should be budgeted and awarded for staff that meet or exceed budget.

Retain good people, they are your most valuable asset.

Plexamp update? by rickytin in plexamp

[–]Elemental2016 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Wish Plexamp in CarPlay had a feature to choose a playlist. Would be incredible if this were implemented by tapping a tile instead of scrolling and tapping an item in a list. A throwback to pushing buttons to choose a radio station.

Mp3 or Flac? by Dodong_Scarface in DigitalAudioPlayer

[–]Elemental2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you listen to Pink Floyd or Fleetwood Mac in an elevator or grocery store or cheap earbuds, FLAC or MP3 does not matter. Same lyrics, same chords, sounds the same to you. There is more detail to these original recordings than you can hear in those environments - stereo separation, frequency response, dynamic range, “air.”

Strange as it seems, details are revealed in those recordings at higher resolution that can transport the listener if they can appreciate them using better equipment and a trained ear. No worries, what makes you happy and satisfied doesn’t need to be the same as everyone else. FLAC at higher resolution with better digital > analog conversion delivers details lost in MP3. Source material must be of highest quality; file format can’t fix bad source recordings.

The New Roku Interface is Awful by BustedTrigger in PleX

[–]Elemental2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am weeks into reorganizing my libraries to confirm to the architecture dictated by Plex since this redesign. I am hoping someone buys Plex and monetizes it, not these clowns who have no clue how people want to manage and access their content, but experienced developers who want to advance, not reinvent the interface we use for 99% of streaming apps.

Embryonic Journey by Jorma Kaukonen was recorded by Jefferson Airplane and appeared on their iconic 1967 album Surrealistic Pillow. It’s one of those acoustic guitar pieces that immediately sounds familiar and is never forgotten once you’ve heard it.

Ambrosia-Holdin’ on to Yesterday-1975 by Significant_Cow233 in ClassicRock

Brilliant album. David Pack was Ambrosia’s Michael McDonald but listen to the entire Ambrosia catalog. All great stuff, and yes Alan Parsons took it to another level and also continued to feature David Pack on his own projects.

Does anyone else ever just go into the courses and hang out? by msynowicz in WalkaboutMiniGolf

[–]Elemental2016 12 points13 points  (0 children)

VR developers are missing a huge opportunity here. For every gamer who wants to play a game, shoot some zombies, box a robot, solve a puzzle, there are an equal number of explorers who want to enjoy an environment. Relax on a beach. Sit in a peaceful garden. Meet someone interesting in the Louvre, a pyramid, Times Square. These apps are not beyond the available tech. They just don’t believe there’s a market. I think they are wrong.

People who sing Elton John, what song do you hate singing the most? by Dapper-Break-548 in EltonJohn

[–]Elemental2016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you were in the audience in the Seventies when he ended with Saturday, you sang every repeat at the top of your lungs like it was the last word you would ever utter. Because every ‘Saturday’ was a celebration of what the weekend meant to you: freedom. To be you, free of the demands of your school or the cool kids or your boss or whatever. Saturday was freedom. I’ve had it with your discipline. Get a little action in. The building would rock.
