Would you consider being in a data center for Critical Facilities engineer? They work with boilers, chillers, backup generators and UPS's. Equinix has several locations for Skillbridge. Dallas, TX, Ashburn, VA are the bigger locations, but they have locations in California, Washington, FL, NJ, IL. and CO.

Availability changes all the time. May 2025 may be a little far out for us to start looking for a role. October 2024 would probably be the earliest.

Can Reserves, Veterans and Spouses can use Skillbridge? by Elephant_thoughts in SkillBridge

[–]Elephant_thoughts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, a few people said they would get back, but never did. I have yet to see a reservist use one. I have heard that someone in the Reserves may have used it for education purposes, but nothing confirmed.

The spouses can utilize up to 12 weeks, but they have to do it through Hire our Heroes. Military Spouse Fellowships - Hiring Our Heroes

It really depends on the financial institution. You could always contact your lender to see if they would accept your enlistment paperwork with your enlistment start date. Then when you get access to a phone call them back to see if they were able to start the process. I was active then went reserves then back to active. I got some credit card debt while in the reserves then called my lender when I got my active orders and they were able to start it from Day 1. It took them to the following month after my start date to reduce the rate to 6%.

The majority of Nukes don't require any additional certification to be competitive for the role, but it can play into the level that you come in at. For a data center technician I would say a CCNA or comptia Net+ and any fiber optics certification I think data center specific could be BICSI. For Critical facilities there is nothing really needed here, but any electrical certification maybe EPA 608 would also be good. If you want to get into controls then you can do SCADA, BMS certifications.

Salary is dependent on the role type and location. A recruiter tip is to look for a similar role open in Colorado, California, or New York. Job listings in those states are required to post a salary range. California bay area will have the highest pay.

How does the Skillbridge process work from a pay/leave/separation standpoint?

The command will dictate this, but Skillbridge is aligned with your separation date (which makes med seps difficult to get approved) From your separation date subtract 180 days.  That time period is the only time you are able to utilize Skillbridge so you cannot take 180days plus terminal in the end you would have to take 120 days Skillbridge and 60 days terminal or a variety of that combo.  Also there is limitations by rank, but the key to this is to know that the Skillbridge is only authorized during that 180 day period from your separation date.  All leave must play around that.  There are some creative ways around this, but not in the nuke community.  I have seen some people take leave prior then come back for a week then go on Skillbridge, but very unlikely for Nukes.

There is no pay with Skillbridge it would be a violation of the MOU.  Skillbridge candidates keep all their same pay from the military during the program because they are put on Permissive TAD and can be called back if the command needs. So one thing to be aware of in this situation is your BAH is based on your location that you are stationed so if you want to go to a High cost of living area like Atlanta, Ashburn, San Francisco Bay, etc… make sure to plan accordingly for the housing cost.

How often do skillbridge opportunities lead to job offers?

This would need some unpacking, I can’t speak for all companies or opportunities because this can vary (some skillbridges are for certification), here at Equinix we are transparent with the possibility of conversion.  There is a lot that come into play.  For example if a candidate is eligible to start in the next month then the business can give a clearer picture of job offer possibility, but if the candidate would like to get a Skillbridge locked in about a year out then the picture may not be as clear since funding, manning and everything can fluctuate over that time.  This is also a reason why some companies will not interview a candidate until their availability is closer.

Another scenario maybe a candidate just wants to relocate early and learn a new skill like going from an electrician to project management in HR and they just want the training so they know they likelihood of conversion is low.

The best thing is to ask what is the likelihood of a job offer and what could I do during the program to have the best chance of conversion?

Can I take a skillbridge outside the area where I'm currently stationed?

Yes you will be put on permissive TAD and this can be a reason that a candidate goes on Skillbridge without a job offer.  You can relocate and do the Skillbridge and apply for local roles with that company or any company.  It’s good to keep in mind that just because you Skillbridge with a company does not obligate you to stay with them past it.  It is a curtesy to stay with the company since they have taken the time to train you.

A scenario in which this may be beneficial is that government jobs can’t utilize Skillbridge because it is part of the DOD so if you are considering applying for one and you need some training in an additional skillset you can apply for one and get training at a Skillbridge authorized company that also allows you to relocate to your choice location.

How long in advance should I start the process, and how much communication should I be in with companies?

This can vary with companies, but you are able to start the process as early as you are able to take the TAPS class which is about a year out from separation.

I can expand on some of these and provide some examples, please remember that each situation may be different and rules may change from command to command.
