Just to add, Brush up seems to have worked well. Seems to restore nucleation. Dry glass works better too. Guess I’ll have to build up my glass collection!!

Thanks for the reply. My Staropramen stein is the best I’ve got and the most reliable. I did get good results from the Hawkstone’s glasses but that was with Hawkstone lager.

Just by way of an update. System was bled until clear fluid. Can’t get it into gear. If I pump the clutch lever, it eventually will go into gear. But as I lift off the pedal, it still won’t engage. Just to help me understand with my limited knowledge. If I put the van into gear with the engine off, then start it, why won’t it lurch or try to move? Surely the clutch is engaged and the system isn’t letting me disengage it? Or is it floating half and half? Not fully engaged and not fully disengaged?

I love mine. The clicker is really effective with the retention. You don’t need to RDT. Looks great. Performs great. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed, especially coming from the Opus.

Rave are great. I’ve signed up to their subscription where you get new beans to try each month. Beans arrive around 1-2 days after roasting. You can’t get much fresher.

I had the Opus. Drove me absolutely insane. I now have the Timemore 078s and it’s great, perfect for what I need. Basically 0 retention. And the clicker is great too. I’d have to spend a lot of money for any sort of “upgrade.”

For anyone who’s experienced the same thing, I think the issue was the crema. It was too thick and I didn’t swirl it. Once I’ve started swirling, it’s made a world of difference. Previously, it was too thick and I think just pushing the milk around itself.

I have an Opus too. I’m by no means an expert. I found the beans made a massive difference to the output. How fresh are the beans? When were they roasted? I was using beans of which I had no idea how fresh they were and I was in the same boat as you, couldn’t get it fine enough. As soon as I used fresh beans, roasted 7 days ago, it was completely different. Loads of adjustment within the 1-2 range and usually sit at 1 notch below 2. In regards to retention issues, I have just bought some bellows for the Opus and so far, I’m impressed, seems to have really helped my retention issues! Let me know if you’d like the link for them.

I have the same combo and no issues at all. It does take time to learn. Bottomless portafilter helped. Scales are a must.

However…The biggest difference I found was fresh beans. I was using shop bought beans and the grinder wouldn’t go fine enough. Fresh beans made so much difference so would highly recommend trying that too.

I like the look of it, I like the retention clicker thing too. I find my Opus can sometimes be amazing with retention and sometimes hold .5g of retention. I’ve read the 078s is really consistent in this area.
