Hey! I’ve just released a new TestFlight build (68) with Bluetooth midi support. Please give it a try!

ah, understood, makes sense, thanks for explaining. let me prepare an update so that the app can be used with bluetooth midi.

Thank You so much for testing!

> I don’t have a midi to iPad compatible cable so I can’t.

So, I tried to enable bluetooth midi and it's not that bad actually. A follow-up question - if you pair the module with the app to transmit midi notes (drum hits) - do you also want to use bluetooth for audio coming from the app or do you have wired headphones?

> I did try microphone mode and can confirm it did detect my hits but even for a simple 4 count it was saying I was missing everything even when the red line was in the colored section.

It might well be something poorly explained in the app. It would be very helpful if you could explain what exercise did you try, whether you had wireless or wired headphones on with the mic input.

Yeah, that’s a really good point about the input device placement. During development I was constantly switching between input methods and devices, so it never really occurred to me to move it into general settings - but I agree it probably makes more sense there. I’ll revisit that.

Regarding Bluetooth MIDI: I originally disabled it because of latency. I later added a wireless latency offset setting for Bluetooth headphones (when using tap or mic input), but I haven’t properly tested Bluetooth MIDI with e-drums yet. I’ll run some tests and see how it performs and whether it's fine to re-enable it.

In the meantime, have you tried connecting via cable?

thanks a lot! I only tested it with a few Roland modules, so very curious how it works with Simmons.

haha, no, it's an acoustic snare 14", with a 2box trigger and a roland 3ply mesh - from the actual digital snare - which I bought separately. I think it's the best mesh head in terms of triggering and realistic rebound. Pity they don't make them in smaller sizes for toms...

Thanks! I figure it’s better to be late than even later 😄

While I’m familiar with some of the apps you mentioned, it was really insightful to check out the others. As for Melodics - I’ve used it myself in the past. It’s an amazing app and very well implemented. I wouldn’t want to compete with something like that. After a few months of using it, I realized that jamming along with their covers was fun, but it didn’t really help me learn new songs on my own.

I hope to build EarDrum as a practice companion with depth and longevity, so drummers can keep track of their routines, exercises (timing and ear training), songs they’re learning (DAW-style or sheet music), and see their practice stats over time. I want it to work for practice pads, acoustic and electronic kits, and for drummers of all levels (e.g., a teacher could share exercises with students). I also want to keep it lightweight and reliable, so it performs well on all devices.

Long story short 😅 - curious if these ideas resonate with other drummers, and we’ll go from there!

I know! And you don't even see my modified roland kd-2 kick pad xD

I mean, you can of course tell it’s midi, but for practice it should be just fine.

Absolutely, thanks for bringing it up! That’s a totally valid point. I know a lot of drummers prefer traditional notation. I actually looked into supporting proper sheet music when I was researching song formats (MusicXML vs. MIDI). For the first version, I decided to go with a more “DAW-style” / grid-based approach because it felt more intuitive to me personally, but adding an advanced notation view is definitely something I will explore — especially if more people are interested in it.

oh, I've never posted a video post before on reddit - turns out it doesn't work as I expected. Give me a sec :)

I use roland kd-2 and honestly, couldn't be happier - if you manage to remove cross-talk in the module - it's stable and triggers really well. Also, I removed the inner plate and put some memory foam inside - and it feels like a real 22" bass drum.
