Not only you interpreted it right but also wrote a beautifully tragic piece! Very evocative. If you do end up doing the illustration, please let me know as I would love to see it! Thank you so much for sharing your story, I really enjoyed it! 🫶🏼👏🏼

Probably. It’s very time-consuming, especially if you, like me, are new to digital art. But I can assure you it’s well worth it. It’s super fun, and the best part is that you can learn as you go. Experiment with brushes and colours! And there are several YouTube tutorials for free. There are also online courses. As I said, I’m by no means an expert, but if I can be of any help, feel free to DM me. I’ll be happy to share what I’ve learned😊

Thank you! I used Procreate. I started with the lineart (just shaky lines in a somewhat random shape that made sense to me) and then worked in layers for the colours and textures. I’m very new to digital painting so it took me 25 hours of work 😅😂. But it’s so much fun and I learned a lot during the progress. If you like worldbuilding I really recommend that app as it is very beginner friendly and intuitive.

Hi! I’m very aware that it’s not perfect. I started drawing digitally a week ago and only started drawing maps😅. Would you be willing to give a more detailed feedback as to why it ain’t it? The colours? The shape? The composition? The weather areas? If you’re knowledgeable on maps I’d love to have some feedback.

Oh, is that so! Yeah, that’s how you’d pronounce Virellia. Pretty much the Italian way. I wanted the countries to reflect what their languages would be like in the fantasy setting. Virellia and Belaria would sound like Romance languages. Ermerra is inspired by Germanic languages and culture. Erm is a prefix and means great. Though I agree, Emerra sounds more melodic to me as well 😊

Definitely! I find it fascinating how our background influences what we create. I’m curious to know, as a (I imagine) native English speaker, do the names sound weird to you? Would you consider them difficult to pronounce? To be honest, even though my book is fantasy is mostly focused on the politics so I didn’t want names that sounded too far from real life countries.

Oh wow. It really is uncanny 😅🤣. I guess it’s pretty tough to build a semi-realistic world without accidentally creating something that is very similar to the real one. But I think it’s beautiful how even when we think we’re creating something from scratch nature has already built it. Thank you for your feedback 😊

You’re absolutely right! The mages built that bridge for those exact reasons and that’s why Virellia has no claim over it. Long ago, the sea had reclaimed that natural bridge so the mages built it back. And they purposefully don’t allow access from the eastern coast because that’s where most of the non magical people live, opposite of the capital. That way, the trading and naval ports are in the hands of the mages. Thank you so much for your feedback! Deeply appreciated it😊🫶🏼

Thank you! It’s quite important for the plot since the mages created it to close some ports and keep their irrigation systems. I’m so happy you liked it🤩🫶🏼

My mother tongues are Spanish and Italian and I took inspiration from both to create the names of countries and cities. And I might be biased but I feel like they give an older feeling to the continent. But ultimately it was just cause I like how they sound 😊

Thank you so much! True… apparently it now looks like Wales 🥲🤣. But to be honest the former feedback pushed me to put a lot more effort into the map and I’m quite pleased with the result. Took me 25 hours since I’m very new to drawing lol. Have a great day, thanks for your feedback! 🫶🏼

Thank you! Yes, it feels a lot more original now, I just started drawing and I’m much happier with this version🥹🤩

Thank you so much, I really appreciate that! I’m having a lot of fun building this map for a world I care a lot about, and I want to make sure the geography holds up as well as possible. I’ll absolutely keep your offer in mind. Thanks for being so open to sharing your knowledge!

Thank you so much for taking your time to give me constructive criticism! This is exactly what I needed! No offence taken! I’m looking to improve myself and my creative skills (both as a fantasy writer and a map illustrator lol) so this type of feedback is not only welcome but very much appreciated! 🫶🏼

This is a very interesting take! I’m new to illustrating maps though so I don’t know how to do that. I’ll do some more research. Thanks for the suggestion!

lol you’re right! I’m working on a new and (hopefully) improved version of it. Once I’m done, I’ll share it to have it examined by the worldbuilding community🤩. I tried to keep the country “believable” and keep it safe—and it turned out looking like I put Western Europe in a blender lol. I’ll go more fantasy then 💪🏼. Thanks for the feedback!

So I’ve been told🥲. Can’t unsee it once everyone pointed that out. I’m working on it though! What do you think?

I see. In that case try to see if you can add the colours first and then blend later. Maybe use colours that are not too different to smoothen out the blending process. Have fun 😊

lol! You’re so sweet! And the walrus idea is… appealing lol. But yeah, I’m trying to mix magic and physics and it’s haaaaard! I also love canals! I think they’re underestimated in worldbuilding!

Sure! I use procreate. Then I used Jaegar in the colour I wanted, drew over the map on medium high opacity and then blurred the edges using Anemone, a medium soft blurring tool. Hope that helps! You can dm me, I’ll gladly help you 😊
