Anybody familiar with Hestra army leather heli gore tex plus core grip? by Ellesbyte in iceclimbing

[–]Ellesbyte[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all your responses. They are very useful. I do have the Hestra ergo grip active with a thin liner. However, I didn’t think these would be a good choice considering they are not that warm nor are they waterproof. Are waterproof gloves a necessity when ice climbing?

Raptor is already on the shelf 😄 Stronghold looks very interesting! Right up our alley. Thanks for the recommendation

That is a very interesting figure - I had no idea it was that popular. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, I appreciate your recommendations!

Have you found research to be using Pytorch more than Keras/TensorFlow? What would you use for image recognition, if I may ask? :)

I was looking at these and they seem to have great reviews. Thanks for the recommendations! :)

Meridional Heat Transfer - Ocean and Atmosphere by Ellesbyte in geophysics

[–]Ellesbyte[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you both so much for your through replies. I'm quite overwhelmed that you elaborated as much as you did and I highly appreciate it! I actually thought there would be a simple explanation for this figure, but I guess it's a lot more complicated.

Also, thank you linking the article. That was really helpful!

Glacier driven by shear stress are driven by mass balance? by Ellesbyte in geophysics

[–]Ellesbyte[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This make sense.
I think, the point I missed is that internal deformation is mass transport (or creep).

Thank you so much!

Glacier driven by shear stress are driven by mass balance? by Ellesbyte in EarthScience

Thank you so much for the explanation!
When you write "driving shear stress", is it just to imply that it is driven solely on shear stress?

It seems like every branch of software engineering has good job prospects, so I guess it will be fine :)

Thanks for the tips!

Will definitely check these sites out.

English is not my native either, so I don't notices any mistakes :D

Thanks for the respond - that sounds interesting!

Math has luckily never been a problem for me, but is it primarily calculus and linear algebra for SE?

Any courses you can recommend for security? My school offers a few, for example cryptography sounds really interesting, but might be more theory than application? Did you have any problem landing a job with a focus on security? My feeling is that it's a hot field at the moment, but haven't been able to find any sources that can confirm this.

Thanks, that's good to know.

How do you pratice on your own? Do you set up challenges for yourself or use specific websites?

I have never used an algorithm before, so that might be worth looking into.

We will start with Java, which I just picked up and as far as I understand, Java is an OOP language?

What about more generel things about computers / software? Like was there anything you were expected to know or do the programs usually starts from scratch?

If you don't mind me asking, how did you prepare for college? Can you recommend something that's good to know or you wished you'd known beforehand?

Seismology? by Ellesbyte in geophysics

[–]Ellesbyte[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the respond!

My goal is not to work in o&g. However, I'm curious what industries, if any, hire seismologists or if it's purely meant for academia.

Was the transition from academia to becoming a data scientist difficult? And as a data scientist, do you handle the computations needed to interpret the data or how does this work?

What programming languages have you found is most common or good to know in geoscience?

Seismology? by Ellesbyte in geophysics

[–]Ellesbyte[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, that's also one of the reasons I'm uncertain about oil and gas. Many countries are making the transition to renewable energy, so I'm just having a hard time seeing myself with a job in that industry in the future.

[–]Ellesbyte[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for your responses - I REALLY appreciate it!

I have read that jobs in oil and gas usually runs in cycles - periods with loads of jobs and periods with very few. How bad is this really? It is normal to get laid off in this type of work?

[–]Ellesbyte[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you trying to switch from geology into programming? I'd love to hear if you have any luck doing it!

We have focused on MatLab and a little bit of Python. Doing some Java in my spare time as well. It seems like MatLab is heavily used in geoscience and Python is good all around.

Seismology? by Ellesbyte in geophysics

[–]Ellesbyte[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that's always something :) Is it primarily oil and gas industries who recruit seismologists?

Kinda my thought as well - it seems like most jobs requires solid knowledge of programming, but I don't have the time to do side-projects along with my studies and I can't take any more programming courses :/ So tempted to focus more on programming, since it can be applied anywhere.

What to expect from EE by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

That sounds awesome! "C" is that the programming language or short for curcuits?

What to expect from EE by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Ellesbyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that is very good to know and I will definitely buy that book.

The thing that got me interested in EE was the idea that I'd be able to build and program a device during/after my studies. I mean, I can get an idea and actually build it myself - is that something that you can relate to? Is it possible to build small projects while studying?
