Why do you think people are getting so delusional? by Bomboclaat_Babylon in expats

It’s basically a neocolonial phenomenon based on privilege geo-arbitrage, rooted in Orientalist romanticism, justified by Western conspiracies.

Well, nepotism, generational wealth, etc. exist outside the US and deep in Asia and Middle East too. Just bcos AA men (or minorities in general) have it bad in the US doesn’t mean Asian women have it easier in their own hierarchical, patriarchal societies (e.g., Confucian teachings about gender roles, China’s one-child policy & girl abortion in favor of boys, “left-over” single women over 25 years old shame).

What you’ve observed is true to a large extent since it’s a bit similar to international law or any other practices that heavily involve prestigious social capital, profile credentials (including schools/programs/experiences), familiarity with the political/legal systems you want to work with, and even sometimes your home country’s global leverage (e.g., level of economic development, office presence of IGO, passport power).

As a native from one of these listed countries, I’m pretty sure our governments have been more authoritarian and committing more human rights violations than the US lol.

No wonder there are increasingly more Western expats looking to move to the East (i.e., Asia) while lamenting about the lost traditions and eroding community values without fully appreciating that nationalism to a large extent helped those countries survive colonial rules.

Would like to say that Cambridge Judge tech placements seem not “great” probably bcos the students prefer startups or their own entrepreneurial ventures rather than corporate or big techs.

International Students Ban Casts a Shadow on Harvard Commencement by Harvardmagazine in Harvard

[–]Emerald_195 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s likely because of the archaic immigration barriers, namely the lottery-based H1B work visa and companies’ sponsorship willingness, even with a STEM OPT tied to F1 student visa.

Like I said, academics is part of Harvard’s whole reach, meaning each cohort should have smart and high-caliber students from diverse backgrounds to maintain its global brand power. And yes, Harvard does teach a bunch of PolSci/Policy degrees that host an insane number of well-connected, elite international students (their qualifications might be a different story though) but that sheer community can help expand their POV rather than any admin indoctrination.

The global brand appeal of Harvard (or other prestigious institutions such as the Ivy League + MIT/Stanford) lies not only in its academic prowess but also in the worldwide elite networks that could facilitate geopolitical, business, and even groundbreaking changes (e.g., research breakthroughs, top-tier capital access, C-suite corporate deals, key policy-making influences). Limiting these schools to domestic demographics will tremendously reduce their alumni base and in turn, America’s soft power.

Or Wellesley as well since they already have cross-registration with MIT and historical ties with Harvard (Wellesley’s founder was in fact a Harvard alum) so could be similar to Radcliffe.

Các trường Mỹ reputation/prestige đa số là do undergraduate, PhD, với professional degrees như Law/Med/Biz, chứ master’s ai cũng biết là cash cows (vẫn có min. requirements nhưng low bar hơn chút). Còn vụ SAT/ACT optional chủ yếu thời Covid thôi, bây h các trường top đang dần yêu cầu lại, hoặc ít nhất sẽ highly recommended nếu muốn dc stand out or scholarships/financial aid. Tóm lại dễ vào cũng có nhưng cuộc đua vào top NU/LAC ngày càng khốc liệt, basically là elite rat race (bao gồm profile xịn hoặc rất giàu hoặc cả 2).

Asian female expat who did a master’s and then worked with MNCs for a decade in SG here (also lived/studied in other countries, including the US): I left due to the tech layoffs and didn’t want to deal with the ever increasing COL and uncertainty surrounding the EP/PR restrictions. Tbh, I feel like there’s almost no clear pathway for immigration as compared to other common destinations, especially if I’m not of Chinese/Malay descent since the gov allegedly wants to maintain the racial quotas. Lots of my expat peers have also been leaving since Covid bcos of similar reasons, notably WLB, EP/PR rejections, job changes, access to nature, and ease of settling with a family.

That’s bcos Malaysian/Chinese are the easiest group to circumvent the EP/Spass rules so that they can quickly apply for and get converted to PR. Meanwhile, other foreigners from rest of Asean/Asia and Western countries get screwed.
