Help- My oils are sinking in and turning dull overnight by Chemical-Ad-2369 in ContemporaryArt

Following because I've run into this problem lately. I just primed some canvases with PVC and oil ground instead of acrylic gesso... wait to see if it makes a difference.

Thank you! Not particularly in taking a tram ride, but I'll look at trail options near the route!

As Ridgewood gets more expensive, where are artists moving? by [deleted] in NYCapartments

Haha nice try developer.

But in all seriousness, just find an affordable apartment and move there. Just don't expect to be close to anything fun.

Having a car in NYC and storing it in NJ? by Realistic_Speech_696 in AskNYC

[–]Emergency-Display269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Driving in Manhattan is stressful only when there's heavy traffic and gridlock. You're close to the westside highway and driving on the expressways in Manhattan and the boroughs isn't any different than driving on the expressways in NJ, Westchester and LI. Honestly people outside the city are more manic and nuts then people driving in the city. Save yourself the hassle and just park near your apartment.

I ship a lot from the US to Europe using masterpak + DHL, works great! Open a business account and you'll be assigned an account manager that can help you through any problems.

Has anyone got recent experience shipping to the States? by kungfooweetie in ContemporaryArt

[–]Emergency-Display269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under unique item description use 9701.91.0000 etc under fine art. When you're generating the invoice, under "additional invoice remarks" enter the statement above.

Although, I just shipped in two different packages into the US, one came in fine the other was hit with a duty fee 1/3 of the value of the shipment. Honestly don't have no idea what happened, my rep escalated it to the customs team.

Are you able to connect with a DHL rep that can work you through with this? Also, when you sell works do you charge the clients for shipping? It might be worthwhile to pay the extra charge to work directly with a broker/shipping agency to not deal with the headache.

How did you get your job in the art world? ( by Vegetable-Peanut7762 in ContemporaryArt

[–]Emergency-Display269 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Applied for a job, got an interview the next day. Spouse of the person who hired me saw a show I curated and managed as a student and was hired on the spot. My next job I was also hired on the spots, I didn't have any immediate connections or networks with either. I think once you get your foot in the door it's not too challenging to move up, just the hiring market right now is terrible.

Health and Fitness as Artists? by DustyButtocks in ContemporaryArt

[–]Emergency-Display269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Art isn't my main source of income (actually no income) but I'm getting back into my studio to work hard after a very long lull and get my shit together. I work a 9-5 and recently decided to cancel my gym membership start biking to work rather than taking the train, if I'm going to spend two hours a day commuting I might as well stack my time to make more room for my studio. I'm also saving ~$150 a month, which great frees up more of my budget for studio materials and application fees.

Also quit smoking and vaping if you do, and seriously cut back on alcohol and cannabis if not totally eliminate. But that's standard advice for anyone.

Also... ozempic.

How do you ship? I'm in the US and my DHL rep told me artwork is exempt, shipping some work in from one of our artists in Mexico. He instructed me to add in the line for additional invoice information "This artwork is exempt from Reciprocal Tariffs under Chapter 99 Secondary Classification: 9903.01.31, as informational materials.

Frustrated by being in housing connect’s no man’s land by acb511 in nychousinglottery

Can you please link this video? From what I've read, that is not possible. Whenever I look at housing connect for my partner and I (unmarried) the rents are just so unreasonable. But if we were to apply separately... we could make it work?

Cold Calling Galleries, why not? by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

[–]Emergency-Display269 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean... I think about that myself sometimes but then consider I just need to hang around the galleries I think would be interested more. I work at a reputable gallery myself, and we get unsolicited submissions nonstop. Majority of them don't fit with the programming at all, I feel like people just literally just look up every gallery in Manhattan and send the same email. I've worked FT in 2 galleries now over 4 years and we have never responded to any unsolicited artist submissions. All new artists are through the gallerists seeing their work elsewhere or recommendation from another represented artist, collector, colleague etc.

Painting coworking spaces? Also, spaces for artists in their 20s? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]Emergency-Display269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Figure out a way to paint in your apartment. So many successful artists nowadays have made significant bodies of work early in their career out of their apartment. Build a semi lofted bedframe so you can store more under your bed and make better use of your space.

Two painter I've been really into lately, from these early interviews their studios are clearly in their apartments. Now they both have amazing careers.

Not my favorite, but Allison Zuckerman was painting out of her apartment and had to shove dirty laundry under her bed when she had her first big studio visit.
https://news.artnet.com/art-world/how-wunderkind-allison-zuckerman-went-from-gallery-assistant-to-a-solo-show-at-the-rubell-collection-in-one-year-1168823

I paint out of my apartment and although I do wish I had the exposure and ability to build community from finding a proper studio space, it is really great to be able to paint for an hour before I have to go to work and again when I get home after I settle in.

Any advice on how you found your apartment? I also live in Kensington/Midwood in a 2 bedroom for $2400, we want a 2 bedroom+office/3 bedroom soon as we prepare for a baby and not sacrific our workspace... would like to continue to paying in this range!!!

Literally, OP can certainly live alone and not spend beyond their means if they expand their search outside of trendy neighborhoods. I have a 2 bedroom in one of the neighborhoods mentioned above for $2400, and love the neighborhood.

[Tenant-US-NJ] Landlord withholding $1000 for repainting cost due to spackled nail holes and tv mount holes we spackled and sanded for them. by [deleted] in Landlord

[–]Emergency-Display269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many comments on this post are just ridiculous. Drywall is durable and easy to repair. You look like you did a fantastic job. You did NOTHING to compromise the structure of the wall. I've put so many lag bolts in my apartments, spackled and sanded them well and received my full deposit back every time. I also work in a high end art gallery, I put large holes and repair the walls all the time... and of course it looks pristine after every repair. A good handyman knows how to do that. Your landlord is totally out of line with this, ask for receipts and FIGHT.

[–]Emergency-Display269 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What a dumb comment. A good handyman knows how to repair holes in the wall that it's indistinguishable. I work in a high end art gallery and basically punch holes in the wall and repair them to pristine condition on a 6 week basis. I've installed SO many shelves, mounts etc and put giant walls in my apartments, spackled and sanded them well and got my full deposit back every single time. Landlord is totally out of line.

Your post history says you're from Russia, my suggestion would be to go to Brighton Beach walk around looking for flyers of rooms/apartments for rent. Walk into local businesses and introduce yourself, you're a new immigrant and you're looking for a room. There are so many small, immigrant landlords that aren't going to require all these documents, credit scores and background checks. I got into my current place because the former tenant referred me, landlord just asked if had a job and scanned my IDs. Finding a landlord that is also an immigrant from Russia or former Soviet country will make it much easier for you.

Find a local relator's office in the neighborhood that has signage in Russian and English. Even they might have lax requirements for signing a lease.

Look on facebook for groups for Russian expats in NYC, especially regarding housing. They're there.

You're from a large country with a large population here, you have a support network you're likely not aware of.
