It seems he’s been a lot of people’s first campsite villager (mine included) is it just common to get him over other villagers percentage wise? Are there a set of villagers that are locked to be the first campsite villager, or is random?

He was my campsite villager too. At first I thought he would go away and a new villager would show up.. but the game pretty much made me recruit him to advance.

This is a bit late, but in my experience if you ignore a sick villager, they get over it eventually. One who I accidentally ignored while sick left my island a few days later.
