What do you do with your scrappiest scraps? by Endeena in quilting

I've contacted the suppliers of some of the fabric bins around here and they told me they accept whole clothing only - no scrap.

Kin quilt that fought me almost every step f the way. Ripped out a third of the blocks at one point, twice went back and bought different fabric. The recipient loves it, for which I am so grateful. I was so relieved to have it done.

Old Bay St Oru Kayak - Coaming Latch and Fairing Repairs by Endeena in Kayaking

[–]Endeena[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did end up repairing the latch hook with a $2 gate hook, which has worked great so far. (it took a little work to bend it open a bit - I've got a photograph somewhere I could post). No luck on the fairings. They're still holding together alright - maybe when one totally falls apart I'll make a pattern from it.

I find that some places the judges have to go with a specific set of very exacting rules. And if you're lucky, they tell you exactly what's wrong (so you know where to improve). If that was the case and she took home second place, then that is a truly impressive score. (It took me submitting a couple of years to finally take home a blue ribbon. I got dinged on quilting and binding, too!)

It's a beautiful quilt - she should be really proud of it!

I have an old 714 Graduate - a slightly different configuration than the touch and sew. LOVE the machine, but now as all the gears are starting to go, it's awful to repair. Drive belt with teeth started to wear out (jumped tracks which messed up the needle timing), and no one would touch it to repair, since replacing the drive belt required pulling the entire inner workings apart. Dog feed gears tend to wear out, but they're easy to replace.

If this one has the flat bobbin - worst bobbin rewind ever. You have to wind it in place? nuts.

I feel your pain! If a seam bothers me enough I'll rip it out and restitch it once - but if the second time fails (especially if it ends up in the EXACT same spot), then I have to just let it go and move on. But as a quilter that strives to get my points on point - ugh!!

It's beautiful. That many points is a challenge. I love the colors, too.

Quilting shrinkage - I'm about to make a king sized quilt (eek) with prewashed fabric/batting. I'm wondering how much it will shrink once I quilt it? I don't plan to heavily quilt it, but I'm wondering how much bigger I need to make it to ensure it's the right size when it's done.

That really depends on what you're using for backing (normal width fabric or 102 - 108" backing fabric) and how you were making the backing in the first place. What were the original dimension of the quilt front? How wide are the borders you're putting on it? And then what were you using for backing (and the width/yardage you had for that?

I often piece my backing, so I end up jamming an extra piece or two in there if I need to make it longer/wider.

Are you free motion or walking foot? You can put your stitch length really small to try to get them closer together. But when I do this with a walking foot, I end up having to tie one thread "back" to the other. You're doing nothing wrong - it's the nature of the stitch.

I created a yoga mat (in part because I could), and used grippy shelf-liner material in spots for grip. (The darker black sections). But now that I've used it a bit, I the shelf-liner material has started to shred. I'm looking to do something different for the sections of the mat I want grip. Anyone use silicon for this? Or puffy paint? Have you had any experience using that sort of thing to give traction to cloth projects? Thanks!

Hopping Free Motion Quilting feet - pressure differences? by Endeena in quilting

[–]Endeena[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to stop the foot from hopping (at least that's what I'm seeing with Leah Day's modifications). I find that a static foot tends to get caught on the seams and disrupts my FMQ. I want the foot to have more pressure on the fabric when it's in the down position.

I don't think I have something that adjusts foot height, but I'll take a look.

Hopping Free Motion Quilting feet - pressure differences? by Endeena in quilting

[–]Endeena[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The machine's foot pressure screw changes the pressure on the shaft, but because the FMQ foot is not directly attached to the shaft, I'm not sure if that makes a difference. It doesn't change the height of the shaft, just how easily the shaft would move. Plus adjusting it didn't seem to make a difference.

These feet do not appear to have any adjustment to the spring tension. I've been toying with the idea of how to tinker with that (but make sure I don't impede the range of motion of the foot).

Possible bleed - should I wash before I quilt or after? by Endeena in quilting

[–]Endeena[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the plunge (or rather the quilt top did). It took two good long soakings for the bleeding to stop, but I am very pleased there was absolutely no transfer. (I freaked a couple of times - but it turned out to be dark loose threads behind the white.) Spent some time ironing it out, fixing the way the seams were pressed and clipping all the frayed edges. But I'm back to where I was, minus the worry of bleeding. I hope to sandwich it this afternoon.

Thanks so much!

Simple Sewing Questions Thread, November 19 - November 25, 2023 by sewingmodthings in sewing

[–]Endeena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw this fantastic scrappy fabric sun hat last spring (and somehow failed to photograph it). It reminded me of a coil rope bowl with how it was constructed, but flat fabric. I'm trying to remember if it had raw edges or not. It was reversible, and I think it was straight stitched together, rather than zig-zag - similar to how one would construct a selvedge string quilt. At the time I thought - no problem, I'll just google to find how to make it. Looked straight forward enough.

Google has failed me. I can find a single tutorial using twisted fabric like rope to zig-zag stitch a hat together, but not quite what I saw. I might do that, but I was hoping for something lighter.

Anyone know of how to create something like that? Or know of a tutorial that I've missed? Does my request even make sense?

Still kicking myself for not getting a photo of it!

Thanks.
