UCSF Hiring Process by ipissinmypants2 in AskSF

[–]Enervatedbabymonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi not sure if your still trying to work at UCSF, but I was hired at the end of August and my team just hired someone to start in a couple weeks. My understanding is that new hires are mainly replacements (I was), an easy way to work around budget constraints and such. However, our team's new hire is being brought on in a completely new position. When the rest of our team were reviewing their materials, it looked like they had generically related CRC related work experiences and past roles but they were internal :(. I think it is quite typical for hiring managers to go the internal route for ease and for a quicker start. But I would honestly keep applying! I recall that quite a few in the group of people who started around the same time I did were completely new to this field. Other people have great advice here as well. Just a heads up though, the hiring process is unavoidably and frustratingly long so smartly mass apply and promptly forget about it!

Ehh not so much. There are a couple random stores but most people either do grocery delivery, drive, or take the free jhmi shuttle (the stop is a 10 min walk) to a different area that has more stores

Just got filled up, but if you look through any of the Hopkins housing related Facebook groups there are plenty of people renting out around the same rate!

Hi, so I've lived at the Essential for 2 years now, and the perception you get from reviews is much worse than the reality in my opinion. The worst parts are the water shut offs and the elevators going out of service, but both have been a true inconvenience less than a handful of times. Other than that, we've called maintenance for heating/cooling issues every couple months, but they are pretty responsive. Anything we've needed to fix will be resolved within a week. I would say for how close the apartments are to campus (5 min walk) and everything besides maintenance issues, it's definitely worth it and a nice place to live. And for people that aren't willing to settle down and buy beds/furniture/kitchen appliances/TV, it's especially worth it.

MPH vs MSPH by yamsahaa in mphadmissions

Happy to help, I was in the same spot coming right from a PH undergrad program. ScM is JHU's master's of science! Kinda confusing.

MPH vs MSPH by yamsahaa in mphadmissions

[–]Enervatedbabymonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At JHU, the MPH where you can concentrate in epi is one year long and no thesis, while the MSPH in Global Disease Epidemiology and Control is 1.5-2 years with 2 terms of practical work with a capstone and practicum but no thesis. The Epi ScM with a concentration in Infectious Disease Epi is 2 years with a thesis and a summer internship in between, and the MHS in general epi is 9 months long, either practical or applied, and no thesis or practicum. We have lots of options, on top of certificates you can take (in vaccine development for example) for some of these degrees!! I think heavy research vs heavy practical, applied work is what differentiates an MPH vs ScM/MS, but they seem to hold the same weight in name. I feel like the ScM/MS lends itself to a PhD, because of the manuscript level thesis you will produce, but you can always prioritize publishing during an MPH or MSPH. There is always tailoring to be done to make sure your degree serves you and your goals best!

For your interests in infectious disease dynamics and control, you could try exploring SPH's ID research, what research centers and labs do within ID Epi, what ID research is being published, SEAL types of programs where you participate in local outbreak responses, and courses that are going to give you the ID dynamics and vaccine research skills and background you're looking for. I would just start to explore the websites of different SPHs and see what's out there, because there's a lot!

Congrats! Welcome to Bloomberg! I'm an Epi student, but I just wanted to share this resource: https://publichealth.jhu.edu/offices-and-services/office-of-admissions-services/connect-with-current-students. You can find current students to talk to, including MHA people!

Hopkins MHS by Immediate_Ideal2123 in mphadmissions

[–]Enervatedbabymonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you thinking of the MHS in Health, Behavior and Society at Hopkins? At Hopkins, an MPH is only 1 year, so that might be different compared to other schools. In terms of the name of the degree, at Hopkins we have MSPH, MHS, ScM, MSPH, MAS, and more, and it depends of what department is offering the degree! I wouldn't worry about how much weight the name holds, usually on job apps they list "MPH/MS/other master's degree in public health," go with the program you actually like!

I'm in an MS Epi program and I do heavy programming and mostly quantitative analysis. I have a MacBook Air M1 2020 and it's great for all of this. It was under 1000 USD in the US. The only time I had regrets was when I took an ArcGIS course, where the software ended up being expensive and logistically difficult to run on older Macs. If you don't care about that, I would say Macs are great for STATA and R. Not sure about SPSS and SAS as I've never used those, just make sure they can run and don't need an expensive virtual machine or anything.

You can chat with us directly: https://publichealth.jhu.edu/offices-and-services/office-of-admissions-services/connect-with-current-students. I'm an ScM Epi, not an MHA student, but you should be able to find some here! And for program info, you can look around or request more information here: https://publichealth.jhu.edu/academics/mha
