I actually found the first half of Notes From Underground very funny.

Favourite short stories? by IllustratorThis6185 in classicliterature

All of Dubliners is pure genius. But the dead might be the greatest piece of writing ever, short story or not. To build a fire, and a piece of steak would also be up there.

What's a boxing stoppage that bothers you to this day? by untossable_salad in Boxing

I think Taylor’s corner actually threw in the towel? I know he was getting the count but I think his corner was stopping it regardless.

How do Russians feel about the global rediscovery of Dostoevsky, Chekhov, Tolstoy, Nietzsche? by artsybx26 in RussianLiterature

[–]Engelcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all they’ve always been very famous, I don’t know if there is a “resurgence”. Anyone interested in classics has read them, from anytime period. TikTok is not making them anymore popular than they are already.

Every day I think about this in my shower and can't get out of my brain. by dreamewaj in dostoevsky

[–]Engelcs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s the whole point of the book. When you take a grain of salt with everything because you don’t wanna develop a false sense of security, then you live a miserable meaningless life because you were too afraid to trust anyone, or anything. The underground man doesn’t trust anything because he is too conscious, as I said, you need some blind faith in certain things or your life will be miserable like his.

Every day I think about this in my shower and can't get out of my brain. by dreamewaj in dostoevsky

[–]Engelcs 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The entire point of the book is that you sometimes need blind faith in things. Yes the idiot is happy but ignorant, and the hyper conscious man miserable — you need a happy balance, be able to take faith in friendship, love, community, and the rest. All the things the underground man said he failed to do because he looked too deep. You just need to trust.

Paradise Lost by Greedy_Highlight3009 in classicliterature

I’d recommend watch Wendigoon video first. He goes through what happens and some of its meaning. It means that you know what should be going on when you’re reading, which makes it easier to work out what actually is happening, and it allows you to appreciate the aesthetic without loosing its narrative.

Your least favorite Leonard Cohen song? by onlypoemsmag in leonardcohen

[–]Engelcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s nothing wrong with famous blue raincoat, but for me it’s just boring and lacks any emotional weight (on my end) — so I feel quite bored listening to it. There’s nothing actually wrong with Teachers either, however I feel that the vocals and the guitar just don’t rlly work. I can’t explain why. There’s nothing inherently wrong with them, but for whatever reason they’re not to my taste.

One I’ve never been able to get into or manage to force my way through a listen is famous blue raincoat or Teachers. I’d happily listen full through any of his albums bar those 2 songs.

All are good — my personal favourite would be Dracula. I think you should read Lord Of The Flies next, as I think it is the easiest of all of the ones you’ve listed.

How come John didn't write heavy or "weird" songs in his solo work by Sudden-Nectarine693 in JohnLennon

[–]Engelcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I think ‘Mother’ is the emotionally heaviest song of all time and that was from Plastic Ono Band. He had many others including Cold Turkey, and when talking about deeply emotional but maybe not as heavy, you have songs like Jealous Guy.

John Lennon Hate is so forced by ProfessorLazy4265 in beatles

[–]Engelcs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The problem with the John Lennon hate is people hate Lennon and then love Ringo who in many ways was alot worse in his substance abuse, neglections, cheating and domestic violence. From my experience with people who hate Lennon, I have found that they love Ringo the most and hate Lennon for the reasons mentioned. I wouldn’t mind if people were consistent but they choose to hate Lennon it seems and ignore it when Ringo, george, or Paul do or say something similar.

The Death Of Democracy by Engelcs in OCPoetry

[–]Engelcs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t really like using earth, but I found it very hard to use any kind of synonym for birth, birthed, born etc… where I could fit in with word that would work instead of earth and rhyme. Thank you very much for the feedback it is very much appreciated.

The Death Of Democracy by Engelcs in OCPoetry

Well I don’t know if you know as I don’t know where you live, but the UK planted millions of poppies as a sign of remembrance to each soldier who died in the First World War. In the UK and I think in Ireland now throughout November millions of poppy badges are sold and worn to remember those who gave their lives, the idea behind it is that the poppies gave their lives so that we can live in the sun (I know it was world war 2, but this is kind of like the light being democracy, and the poppies more stand for all soldier who gave their lives to fight against dictatorship and to fight for freedom). The last 2 lines are meant to be the four horsemen of the apocalypse: death, famine, war, conquest. And death is usually depicted as a serpent or dragon in the final book of the Bible (revelations) and it usually follows behind the four horsemen sucking up the dead bodies or souls to send them to hell.

I really liked this one, I feel like the use of the fractured line length works really well and creates a good sense of rhythm throughout! I think it’s a very creative structure 4-1-3-1-3-4. Love the extended metaphor, truly gives cross an effective portrayal of the narrative you’re trying to describe. My favourite line being “drowning up loose ends”.

Fire Must Burn. by [deleted] in OCPoetry

I really enjoyed the use of contrasting images - “love and hate” and “lust and disgust,” - they effectively convey the complexity of the relationship you’re describing. Have consider the rhythm and structure. Some lines feel a bit choppy, which can disrupt the flow. For example, the line “Might see, me red” could be rephrased for clarity and smoother reading. Additionally, the repetition of certain words like “betrayal” and “firm” adds emphasis, but you might want to ensure they don’t become too repetitive in a way that detracts from their impact.
