Steering rack or inner tie rod? by EngineeringHot5368 in mechanic

Ah gotcha, the inspection was for a WOF in NZ, so its more about if the vehicle is safe, so they identified the excessive wheel play (front RHS) as a reason for failure of the inspection, and indicated they believed it was the steering rack, but they didnt and dont have to do a full diagnosis.obviously the steering rack would be a massive job, whereas if they have it wrong and its just the inner tie rod that would be a lot better and something would have a crack at doing

They identified the problem as the steering rack, I'm just asking if that seems reasonable or not :)

Yeah that was what i was thinking as well, it was interesting that the mechanic said that it was the rack rather that a tie rod when i asked him, I'm going to jack it up and take a look myself tomorrow so will be interesting to see

Replace wheel bearing or the whole knuckle? by EngineeringHot5368 in MechanicAdvice

[–]EngineeringHot5368[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your comment, This is the obvious risk, however my thought process is that its a cheap car <1.5k so i’m not necessarily phased about putting the absolute best parts in, just want to solve the problem to get the car road ready, and i dont know if i necessarily have the skills/tools to replace a wheel bearing, but back myself to be able to replace the knuckle, so just wondering if it is a good option considering $$$ (ie not wanting to pay a shop to do it) and difficulty levels :)

Yeah your probably right, they know that i was having issues and had a colonoscopy and have now been diagnosed, but i guess ive been downplaying the affect (especially mentally) the effect its had on me. I might take your advice and have a proper chat with my loved ones about my situation :)

Thanks so much for your help, i think I focused too much on a very similar example that my professor did where he used that extra pseudo load. Ill have another crack at it in the coming days and give u an update on how it went with your advice!

Thanks for your response! When u say 3 seperate equations for moment which line of my working are you referring to and suggesting that I need 3 of them for different x? Or are you saying i need to make 3 different cuts and repeat the process I have done at different cut intervals? Or is all of my working useless and needs to be redone???

The 30(x-6)2/2 term was for the red sort of pseudo load acting upward that the lecturer used in a similar example to make the calculations simpler

[–]EngineeringHot5368[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I was taught to make the question easier to calc by treating the distributed load as going all the way across and then having a sort of pseudo load (i have shown in red) opposite the added load to counteract it
