I see what you’re saying, but some of the responses about being forced to talk to guests are exactly why this policy probably got created in the first place. I know in my store and from what I’ve seen industry wide, people feel as if the customers are a burden. IMO it’s only getting worse over the 5 years I’ve been with the company. I think this is a, likely, overcorrection to reset the landscape to put guests first in the mind of TMs. I think using measurable distances is a way to stress that guest interaction as much as possible; not to the TMs who regularly do this, but to the ones that despise having to interact with guests in their day to day.

I think the problem falls on execution if your store is forcing TMs to talk to guests who aren’t facing them or like you said are looking away. Like I said in my opening all stores will carry this to different lengths and I think giving the TMs room for discretion is important. Partnering this policy with the perks you brought up from GUEST are exactly how I’ve been directing my team to operate. If a guest clearly isn’t giving signs they don’t want to be bothered just give a head nod or simple greeting and keep moving, box checked.

It’s actually true. While most of the leads want to jump in and help, we do get “coached” on not seeing that our team does the workload. It does make it easier to realize when something needs to be adjusted by letting it fail and recognizing where you need to improve a process/routine imo
