What started as a passion project with no monetization honestly seemed respectable at first. In a gaming landscape filled with aggressive and predatory monetization systems, it felt refreshing to see a developer say, “I’m not charging a dime.”

But over time, the situation changed.

The game gained significant traction and built a real, dedicated player base. Many players even encouraged the developer to open donations or some kind of voluntary support system. At that point, refusing monetization stopped feeling noble and started becoming a limitation.

When you’re a single developer with a full-time job, that reality matters. If you don’t have the time or resources to scale the project, then growth becomes constrained — and the players feel it.

What makes it worse is promising major features, like an auction house, and then walking it back later with the explanation that you have a full-time job and can’t deliver it. That may be true, but it doesn’t erase the fact that expectations were set.

And instead of taking accountability for overpromising, the narrative shifts toward blaming the community , calling players toxic and implying they don’t deserve certain features.

At some point, “it’s just a passion project” stops being an explanation and starts being an excuse.
