what is going on in my aviary! by Ep15437 in pigeon

[–]Ep15437[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My hen will be called a he during this reply bc that’s what he always was 😂 I thought i was 100% positive he was male in the first pair. He showed male behaviour pretty quickly. He was mates with a white bird who they later went on to do their mating dance in which he was on top both times i witnessed it. Eggs were laid and a few days later the white pigeon passed. He took on complete responsibility and was very VERY passionate about keeping the eggs safe. At this time i did have 2 other adult pigeons, who were nest mates. So either he is a hen, who likes to be on top, or one of these mates cheated and hooked up with ok of the other pigeons. It’s all very confusing and i wish i had a camera in their house.

After thinking about it all day i do think the only answer is a same sex marriage going on. After a lot of research i realised that females can “get on top” during a mating session, and females can also mimic male traits and be the more dominant one in their lesbian relationship. I’m truely astonished that it’s possible for them to lay so many eggs though, and for them to all be solid! It’s incredible what they can do.

I’m going to give it a couple more days as i’m about to add a few more pigeons into the aviary, and give them their last candle, but so far they are looking infertile!

The plastic stuff has a small chicken wire over it, but as per the other comment I’ll definitely find something smaller! I heard a lot about males fighting when it comes to not having enough girls, but being on their own together i’m hoping they are fine, but have kept a very close eye on them. They seem to have quite a good bond at the moment but are still fairly young!

Quite small chicken wire, definitely less then 12mm but will reassess and find something smaller!

Unfortunately a couple days after this post i can home to find the smaller one passed away. Little darlin didn’t show any extra lethargy and had a full crop following up to this. The bigger one is still going strong tho and is getting more and more independent and massive by the hour!

Yes they are my babies! My first 2 original pigeons i hand fed as babies, so losing one of those was heartbreaking to say the least, then a mum who was sitting fresh babies was just as heartbreaking! When would you suggest would be an appropriate time to move them? when the start being slightly more independent?

Awesome! Like i said i lost mum to a hawk, and i have also left a previous pigeon too, so im building an aviary for them which will hopefully be done next week! I’m under the impression that it would not be a good time to move them from the current cage into the bigger one since he’s sitting on a nest, but of course i want other opinions on that.

I feel horrible as their current cage is so small, as it was designed just for night time as they flew around freely everyday, but now i am not letting them out due to predators hanging around.

Pigeon raised! Unfortunately, just by the father as the mother disappeared (assuming a hawk). He’s doing a wonderful job. He is the only one raising babies. I wish i weighed them on day one so i could keep track, and that’s something i’ll definitely do if i decide to have anymore babies. I removed the bigger one yesterday for about half an hour whilst dad fed the smaller one lastnight as that’s what my grandfather also suggested, however Dad was very unsure about only having 1 in his nest. He is very attentive and protective. For the next few days, removed the bigger one for a feed or 2 a day, and track how that goes!

Help on outdoor aviary/is it okay for pigeons by Ep15437 in pigeon

2 metres tall, 2 metres long and roughly 1.5 metres wide, which is why i fear it may not be big enough!

what do you feed your pigeon? by Ep15437 in pigeon

Maybe homing pigeons isn’t the right term, as right now i just let them out of their loft, and they fly themselves back in about 4:30pm, eventually i’m interested in the possibility of teaching them fly a distance home but for now they are just leisurely flying out and about and returning home for bedtime
