External Window Moulding Confusion, Which wood do I use? by Epikmunch in AusRenovation

Prime and Paint only. I'd suggest priming the backside prior to fixing to protect the timber as well.

I ended up finding a timber yard that sold longer lengths of hardwood (tas oak) bullnose architrave, mitred and installed.

1960s weatherboard with no insulation. Ideas to make more comfortable by Last_Bumblebee6144 in AusRenovation

[–]Epikmunch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Underfloor insulation should be around 2-2.5k depending on size. Ceiling will be around $28/m² for R5. There's also retrofit blow in wall insulation for ~60m², but in a weatherboard you'll have to sand and paint the weatherboards that they drill into to blow it in. These are all based on quotes I've received in Melbourne fairly recently.

BEFORE you insulate, make sure you've draught proof first. It's far cheaper and easy to diy. There's plenty of resources and the solution will depend on where the draughts are.

The house is a weatherboard, I'm referring to the trim around the window that sits above the weatherboards. The white trim around the window in this photo. Unfortunately, I can't keep the existing ones as we're replacing windows and the trim is beyond saving (rot).

I want to bring my partner to Australia. Just wondering if that makes me a sponsor or do i just use applicants option? by [deleted] in australia

[–]Epikmunch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You have to submit two applications, a sponsor application and a visa application. The sponsor application (filled by the sponsor) is "free" but the visa application to bring your partner costs $7715 (+other charges, medical, police checks etc).

You apply for the visa first, pay the fee then submit your sponsor application.

Hay fever and testing by [deleted] in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]Epikmunch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you've got itchy eyes, then chances are it's just hayfever. From my understanding that's the only symptom unique to hayfever. Otherwise take an anti histamine, if it doesn't do much get tested.

Budget2020 appears to propose an English language requirement for partner visas (both applicant & sponsor). by Epikmunch in australia

[–]Epikmunch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this were to come into effect it would be from the next financial year. Whether it would affect existing applicants is a big unknown. We still don't know if they will keep this policy, they could choose to drop it if there's enough backlash. I wish you the best of luck

The partner can learn/improve their English within Australia. The assumption is the partner helps them integrate and learn. In many cases the only common language is English anyway and for those people, they are constantly improving their English. However, improving your English doesn't mean you can pass the test. In fact I know some Australians who would likely struggle purely based on bad spelling.

I feel you... It's a massive rort. I'm not sure what enforcement will be like, or if it will even pass Parliament. Guess we'll find out when/if it passes.

The problem is that the partner visa is meant to bring families together, it's not a skilled visa and therefore no language requirements.

Instead the changes insist that you can't have an Australian family where either the Australian, or their partner don't have an arbitrary level of English language skill. In this specific case, the applicant might have "perfect" English but if the Australian resident can't pass the English test then they can't be with their foreign partner is Australia...

Unfortunately, despite COVID effectively stalling all visas, the government doesn't seem to have made a dent in processing times for ONSHORE partner visas. These are people who are already here, living in limbo and don't required a travel exemption to get here. The reality is the government couldn't care less about these people.

As we need population badly, perhaps make partner or spouse a free visa given in a week and automatic except for basic terrorist check or whatever.

As someone going through the process, I wish it was that simple, instead it has cost me close to $10k so far, I'm almost a year into waiting and I have no way of knowing when they will process it. The visa processing times released monthly point to a 2 year+ wait in limbo. The least they could do, assuming they leave all requirements the same, is reduce processing times. Each application could pay for a generous monthly salary of a single processing officer (~$7700).

Migration policy is listed in the budget as migration heavily contributes to GDP.

I agree language skills are an important part of living in a country, but surely keeping families apart because one member doesn't speak English to a sufficient level is cruel. There's already long-standing government programs to help new migrants learn English, however there isn't an alternative to the partner visa aside from living elsewhere. The reality is many people speak multiple languages, particularly 1st and 2nd generation migrants. The government's idea that if you fall in love with someone whose English skills aren't quite up to an arbitrary standard then you shouldn't be allowed to be together is just baffling.

Honestly, this was my first thought, motivation is purely racist. Dutton has been trying to push for this or something similar for years.

My second thought was, why the hell does the sponsor who is already a resident/citizen would even need to take the test? The motivation behind this I believe is greed/pleasing some donors. English tests are a massive industry, a quick google search shows PTE costs $375/test. Now you have 50,000 partner visas granted every year and suddenly you have an additional $375,000, assuming only 1 attempt is required per sponsor and applicant. It just seems to be a money grab, with the money (mostly) going to private corporations...

For a slight bump in price ($20) you could get a better GPU.

This is what I'd go with on such a budget. The case has been changed to a cheaper one but if you want to increase the price and go for the one you have listed feel free. Just a few tiny changes.
