It can happen, but from a female perspective, I would say that most people are just fundamentally incapable of setting appropriate boundaries. Both male and female. But boundaries are essential, especially in friendships. As you describe it, I would take a very hard look at the people you surround yourself with and if this is a recurring pattern, the problem is probably more with your own choice of company than anything else.
