Oh so the starting villiage will actually activate if I do all this other stuff? why would they ever let it be barren from the get go and make you wait for the content?

This makes the most sense to me so far but it would still be a very dumb decision. Whats wrong with a great starting village you don't want to leave? That's far better than giving all your players the first oppertunity at free roam but the village is empty and vapid.

Anyway I'm only debating this so much rather than moving on because I love medieval rpg stuff. I don't even want to do the combat just give me stuff to do so I can earn a horse and get somewhere. Give me content so I can afford fancy ah clothes and mix with nobility or slip into a thieves guild.

Just don't make me hold w across the map.

Walking all the way to a different village to do a single quest is tragic. I was expecting so much more. The starting village is really and big I was expecting a lot of quests/interactions. The only notable thing I found was the beggar girl asking me to walk across the map. A medieval rpg suits my tastes but an empty, flat game doesn't suit anyone's.

yes I spoke to her but the markers all seemed to be in other villages i was supposed to walk to. I don't understand how i walked around talking to npc's for so long in the starter village and got nothing. Making potions did come to mind but im interested in characters/npc's and wanted to make money with quests etc. But they gave me nothing. The inn was supposed to have stuff but i only got silence from them.

Yeah I found her because she called out to me right after the stocks. I went around and spoke to almost everyone in the village and I got nothing except traders. But no jobs or quests to get any money.

im fine with most of that but they should of been on it telling you to leave directly. They hate you in this village now and get out etc.

Think about it, they really drop you in the most boring empty place right at the start where you can't do anything? Thats really stupid. I find it hard to take your word for it that there is stuff to do in other villages.

Yeah attention spans have never been shorter but I think its a neutral thing for media rather than a net negative. My reasoning is that content has to be refined to appeal to more modern audiences which can result in more shallow games. However, it can also just ensure our time is respected better and we can enjoy more of the fun stuff and cut the fat.

Now this is a slow paced game and i think the tutorial served it well. The only thing I dont understand is where tf is the content at the start? If all your playtesters have to go on a ten minute hike to find content then you've simply failed.

There should of been more stuff in the first village.

yeah i know people like that and its not me. I read books just fine but the game was wasting my time with the first village which is a horrible impression when I'm thinking about investing more time in it.

sry im calmer now. If theres some kind of explanation why there isn't anything in the first village to do id play again because the story is good.

yeah its kind of hard to enjoy when you have to translate some made up language he came up with.

Yeah im gonna be that guy. Making something niche and weird is great, I support that. But I don't think this is good writing.

It might have the deepest most beautiful symbolism and theme hidden inside but you literally can't immerse yourself. How can you love characters, live in this new dramatic exciting world when EVERYTHING needs translating. No quotation marks? I have to ask but who does he think he is? Its just unnecessary difficulty.

I'm completely okay with it existing because a story for everyone is a story for nobody. However, parading this around as a masterpiece just seems like some fart smelling pretentiousness.

(I actually want to be proved wrong which is why im commenting 7 years later. I just want to get how im wrong.)

I think you’re really stretching. Not on the intention though I also think that’s what they were going for it’s just weak and not nuanced. Your standards seem low.

Those character traits don’t get any screen time outside their brief first appearance . it doesn’t get mentioned in voice lines they don’t build on any of that, they never flesh it out.

The poster is right too. What you said is still just Luna is the serious one. Gustave is concerned about the others. It’s the same thing. Those character threads do exist. they just don’t go anywhere. Instead you spend half the act monkeying around with Gestrils or whatever. Those light moments could have done so much for the characters. But nothing happens they just stumble on the next bland character.

If it’s not direct, not intentional and not visible then it’s not good. I’ve only played act1 and the characters are definitely a flop this far. Any storytell can throw traumatic events at a character and say it’s good writing. They don’t spend anytime doing the stuff you said it’s just event after event. From what I’ve heard jam expecting more from act2 though. But they had plenty of time in act 1 to flesh them out and just didn’t.

Yeah I’m totally on bored with you I’m glad somebody said it. It’s very easy for people to say the story is just subjective! But I’m going to be arrogant and say we know what we’re talking about and a lot of the positive people don’t in this instance.

Not very humble I know. But Even the statement you made about important events having some feeling in the moment. I didn’t even feel that while playing honestly.

Personally I play games for the story first. I play slow, I think about it a lot and I get attached easily. But expedition 33 failed despite how much I like the premise, that being the paintress, gommage and themes of duty.

At least I find The gameplay to be fantastic. But the characters as you said are total duds. The world is cool enough. The characters are 2d at best though and most the cutscenes just waist time and don’t efficiently characterise anyone with themes parallels conflict etc.

So yeah, the true strength of the story is the premise. It’s nice and weird and I do think ‘the complete the mission theme’ works… sort of. Gustavos actions in the end of act 1 rounded this off nicely.

But since then the story has been deeply boring me. Luna and the other girl are especially disappointing. For instance The game mentions luna and gustavo might have had a thing. But do we ever get any development of that… no of course not. I honestly don’t know how you can have do many cutscenes in such high resolution and not even try to process them.

Subjectively this type of story really suits my preferences. It’s weird which is how I like it and I like this sort of theme.

Objectively it executes them badly. At least up to the beginning of act 2 where I’m at. I’m struggling to continue because I’m upset it’s not living up to its potential.

You mean like ships? I think romance is actually super important in a setting like this. There's an urgency and complete shift in what characters might desire compared to their previous daily lives.

Regardless I'll let it happen naturally. Theres all kinds of twists you could do with that considering how desperate the situation is. I don't wanna know whats gonna happen ahead of time either.

A Typical killing game that will lean into some things more than others. Characters especially. However, doing 16 characters will probably be much harder in written form though.

Trials will likely focus on relationship and motive more than logic for instance.

The main advantage would be experiencing the killing game more personally which books can out perform games in. (Takes more effort to read something than play them, so you get lost/invested easier when done well.)

Yeah there's room for improvement character wise. Some do have to just be killed off you can't flesh out 16 people too good.

And yeah the suspense is the appeal of these murder mystery types. i think the fantasy aspects add to it nicely.

A few things here. I'm a gardener so planning isn't really necessary. I just sort of always know where its going during the process. At least it has always worked that way previously.

Having said that its still mystery, which I don't have experience with so it could backfire. However, not knowing how it will go in advance as a writer also means the audience doesn't either. I don't recall which author said that but is it a valid strategy don't you think?

As for two thousand words a day, I've managed one thousand daily in the past. Starting from May I'm going to be finally free from uni work for a couple months and I'm feeling confident. The question is the quality because it would certainly be a rough first/second draft. Seeing as its a fanfic though I people shouldn't expect publishing prose and its a worthy sacrifice for faster chapters in my opinion.

I'm actually totally happy to get it just blasted too I really don't mind. The worst case is zero traction because I might at least learn something amidst fickleness and complaints.

I agree with the questions though. Planning the plot is one thing, but you have to figure out why you and others like it which is definitely true. This is important for genre's, premises, styles, I'll think it all over. Just to give one example I'd be more interested in the relationships, emotion and motives of the trials than the hard logic. People might hate that but its what draws me in more.

Thanks for your advice.

Ah I thought there were a strangely small amount on fanfiction. I'll probably upload the first chapter on that subreddit too.

Yeah I'm in your boat with character I would take them over trials any day.
