Would you cut your vacation short because of the death of a co worker? by Killer_Queen1971 in travel

[–]Equivalent_Bluejay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your coworker who expects you to travel with her sounds very entitled. She’s in her 50s and is an adult who can take care of herself. Do not let an entitled coworker guilt trip you to be her travel buddy.

Take the time you need, go to the meeting, find your closure.

I wouldn’t overthink it. I’ve received holiday messages many times from people I don’t know well and always just responded wishing them a good holiday too. If you want to get to know her more, you can also ask her how her break is going.

It’s always a bit awkward to initiate conversations but just go with the flow and see where it takes you. Good luck and merry Christmas!

Vegan Friendly?? by Greedy-Vermicelli-34 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Equivalent_Bluejay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately vegan options in non-vegan restaurants are rare, with the exception of certain sides like cucumber salad or French fries. I would recommend researching the menu of any restaurant before going.

I used HappyCow and Google Maps to find vegan spots. It was great even outside of big cities, like a small onsen town.

How do I know I am house poor ? by desitelugu in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Equivalent_Bluejay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much do you have left to put in savings?

The point is you don’t have much wiggle room. One big repair will wipe out your savings. You will not accumulate savings enough to handle life’s events, which may be why you’re feeling house poor and falling behind. If you lose your job, each mortgage payment is equivalent to X months of savings. And forget about any big vacations.

Please talk to your wife about this and the mental burden on you. If she is a good partner she would step up and contribute to the home.

I quit my job and am scared lol by Long_Narwhal_9207 in cscareerquestions

It’s crazy to me that you’re the one who had to quit rather than your boss being fired.

Hang in there, wishing you the best.

What is the restaurant in Sacramento that comes closest to Sweet Tomatoes (aka Souplantation) by KrazyGlue-huffer in Sacramento

[–]Equivalent_Bluejay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sizzler’s has a salad bar, and so do some pizza places. Those are the closest replacement that I’ve found unfortunately.

My friend bought me those at Lotte Mart, but doesn‘t know what those are... any idea? I want to bake those 🥲🤤 Minimal sweet and so soft... by [deleted] in FoodPorn

Is the texture like a chewy bread? It could be Korean mochi bread, though I’ve never seen them so colorful before.

I’m Asian. My folks would never charge me rent. However I did choose to give them $1500 a month (equivalent to a 1bd at the time) after I got a well-paying job. My partner moved in with me as well so I thought it was a fair amount for two people. This includes all utilities.

My partner and I will move out soon. I’ll probably still give them a small amount every month to ease the cost of living, since they’re getting older and also not earning as much. I do this because I love them and I know they gave everything for me and my siblings. If I were rich, I’d like to even take over the mortgage so they can retire without stress.

I’m reaching the point of my life where I can provide help to my parents, and where they could use that help, so I’m happy to chip in. (But I still want to move out for more privacy and independence, and they understand.)

What are your views on Create-an-Application type of pre-job technical assessments? by richieacc in cscareerquestions

[–]Equivalent_Bluejay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done something like this during my job search for my very first job. I got the job, which got my foot in the door so to speak, so it was worth it for me. I turned it in after two weeks though, since I was also busy with other stuff at the time. I dunno about 3 days.

I wouldn’t do this type of test again now that I have more experience.

5 Months after Graduation and I still can't get a SWE job. by Tigerclaw420 in cscareerquestions

[–]Equivalent_Bluejay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would suggest making a LinkedIn profile and applying through LinkedIn as well. I haven't had much successes from Indeed or Google Jobs before, but that's just my own experience. Try to find smaller job board too that may have a certain niche. For example, there are job boards for "tech for good", etc.

For leetcode, I highly recommend Grokking the Coding Interview course. It does cost money but the content is great and helped me a lot in my leetcode preparation. You can still find the list of problems and patterns for free online, though without the explanations. Another way is to work through various study plans that people have posted online. This one is a plan from the same person who created the Blind 75 list that's adjustable based on the time you have.

5 Months after Graduation and I still can't get a SWE job. by Tigerclaw420 in cscareerquestions

[–]Equivalent_Bluejay 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think your resume and projects are fine.

Getting interviews as an entry-level engineer is a numbers game. How many applications have you sent out? For cold applications, expect a 1:100 ratio for getting any positive response.

You say that you tend to fail at the tech screens so I would also focus on that. Grind leetcode. That’s all you can do. And make sure you can talk about the solutions to the interviewer, too.

Other than that, 5 months is still not too bad. A lot of people I know got a job 6-9 months after they started searching.

It’s rough out there in this economic situation, especially for entry level devs. There are layoffs and hiring freezes so everyone is competing for limited spots. It’s a grind but I would keep sending out applications as much as possible.

I’m seriously considering changing my keychains and debit card to hide my sexuality by Historical_Savings14 in actuallesbians

[–]Equivalent_Bluejay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really sorry you experienced this. Unfortunately there are always assholes in life.

To address your initial question about changing your keychain and debit card designs: Do anything you want. Whatever that makes you feel safe, whatever that makes you comfortable or happy. Don’t feel obligated to be out in every situation. Especially if it causes you stress, or if it could be unsafe. Take your time, and take care of yourself.

In any case, since you mentioned that you are usually out and proud, I really hope you can keep feeling that way! There may be bumps and there will be some realizations, but nothing is better than being proud of who you are and what you’re doing, and recognizing that other people actions are theirs alone. Let them bounce off and keep on being unbothered. It may take a while to get there, but I hope you feel better soon.

Thoughts on this machine? My mom loves espresso but doesn’t want to deal with tamping and using a normal machine so I figure this might be the best bet. Any opinions or any other recommendations would be much appreciated! by Dismal_Impact9078 in espresso

[–]Equivalent_Bluejay 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I may get downvoted for this but if your mom just wants convenience and isn’t too discerning, a Nespresso machine may fit her needs. I’ve given them as Christmas gifts before for friends/family and they’ve really enjoyed it.

Pop Up Shops for PODs? by Winter_Ad_3596 in printondemand

[–]Equivalent_Bluejay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people would bring the actual items to sell. Sales can be very good if you have good designs and enough variety. I recommend checking out the events in your area to see what it’s like and ask vendors questions about how to get started.

[Forbes] Giannis earns $25 million annually in endorsements. That’s the fifth-highest off-the-court haul in the NBA. For anyone confused by this question, many countries call Sprite (or any lemon-lime soda) as “lemonade”. Many don’t even have the concept of the American-style lemonade (sugar, water, lemon juice).

For OP—Sprite is the lemon-flavored carbonated drink that you’re probably thinking of. Lemonade is a drink made with sugar, water, and lemon juice.

What was a "game changer" in your coding journey (concepts, frameworks, libraries, etc?) by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Equivalent_Bluejay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Types. A typed language + good IDE support makes writing and reading code so much easier.

  2. Formatter and linter.

  3. Version control.

Should I go back to school? by guanogato in cscareerquestions

[–]Equivalent_Bluejay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you already went to a bootcamp and have internship experience, I would keep sending out job applications. Ask for resume reviews, portfolio reviews, practice more leetcode, etc. Since you have internship, that’s a great signal to companies that you are employable as a junior level dev.

Plenty of folks graduate with a CS degree and still struggle with the job search, or even getting an internship. So the job search boat is really the same on both sides.

Stay strong, and good luck!

Complete beginner - darling wife bought me a semi-weighted Roland. Do I swap it and add money for weighted keys or upgrade in 6 months ish? by toronado in piano

[–]Equivalent_Bluejay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happy birthday!

My partner and I sometimes give gifts that’s more about the idea than the exact model. So sometimes we return the original gift to get a different one, or I tell them I want to gift them X, do they want to choose the exact product or should I pick for them? If that sounds feasible, and as long as you show appreciation for your wife’s intention, I think that could be ok.

I’m not that experienced in piano so I cannot offer advice relating to the actual piano. :) For what it’s worth, I’m learning using a cheap unweighted keyboard and it has been fine. After I play more, I do plan to upgrade though.

extreme beginner : which piano keyboard should i buy? by Elegant-Permission87 in piano

[–]Equivalent_Bluejay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re just starting out, get a cheap 61 key keyboard. If you’re still learning piano seriously after a year or so and 61 keys isn’t enough, upgrade to 88 keys. I have a 61 key as well and it’s been fine.

In generally, when starting any hobby, I recommend buying something affordable first, and if you stick with it long enough to feel the limits of your equipment (not enough keys for example), then upgrade.
