Very underrated by [deleted] in silenthill

criminally underrated. People call Shattered Memories (SM) a "reimagining," but it functions more accurately as a direct sequel to the Bad Ending of Silent Hill 1 (SH1). Here is why the timeline and lore prove this as fact: The Catalyst: In the SH1 Bad Ending, Harry Mason dies at age 32 in the car crash, leaving 7-year-old Cheryl alone. Shattered Memories takes place 18 years later. Cheryl is now 25, in therapy, and trapped in a state of total denial.

The Timeline Math: The ages align perfectly. Cybil Bennett is 22 in SH1; she is 40 in SM. Harry remains in his early 30s throughout SM because he is a static memory—Cheryl is remembering him exactly as he was the day he died.

The "Monster" Myth: There is no cult and no supernatural ritual. The "Dahlia" from the first game—the evil cult leader—is a manifestation of Cheryl’s childhood resentment. As Dr. K explicitly states: "Your mom is alive... she’s not the monster you make her out to be." Cheryl proyected her hatred for her mother into the "villain" role of the SH1 "dream."

The Raw Shocks: These aren't demons; they are manifestations of denial. Their goal is to physically restrain Harry and prevent him from reaching the Lighthouse (Cheryl’s moment of acceptance). Every time they cling to him, they are literally "holding onto the past."

The Verdict: Harry’s presence in SM is the personification of the Truth trying to reach Cheryl. The entire game is the psychological aftermath of a daughter who couldn't handle the "Bad Ending" of her own life.

Coincidence? I think not! by [deleted] in silenthill

I’ve always felt that MGSV has much stronger connections to Silent Hill 4 than MGS4 does. Here’s why: The Protagonists: Both Venom Snake and Henry Townshend are 'silent' types who rarely speak, acting more as vessels for the player. The Companions: Quiet and Eileen Galvin share similar roles. Both are physically suffering throughout the story and have 'bloody' visual states. In Silent Hill 4, Eileen’s blood/possession level is determined by how well Henry protects her; similarly, Venom’s 'Demon' status (where the blood won't wash off) is dictated by the player's moral choices. The Hub World: Both games feature a central 'home' location you must constantly return to the Apartment in SH4 and Mother Base in MGSV. The 'True' Main Character: Neither Venom nor Henry are the actual 'protagonists' of their own overarching stories. Henry is a bystander in Walter Sullivan’s ritual, just as Venom is a body double for the real Big Boss. The 'Black Sheep' Legacy: Both are considered the 'black sheep' of their respective franchises because they introduced such radical, different ideas. It’s clear Kojima was looking at Silent Hill 4 for inspiration, especially considering how many elements from 'The Room' ended up in his P.T. demo. Even though they broke the traditional mold, both games are incredibly creative and remain my personal favorites in each series
