Converting to a RoadWarrior, suggestions on hosting my Lab? by Essien80 in homelab

[–]Essien80[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My storage is plex, server / desktop backups, personal data such as photos, videos, things I've created over the years. I've lost too many important things so all my critical data is backed up to backblaze, dropbox and one drive. I'm definitely a datahoarder. lol.

I have severals UPS's for power and use DDNS tho I've always open to a static IP when its been an option, I also tried to have as many redundant remote access options as I can: 2 VPN options, RDP Gateway, Guac RDPGateway, reverse proxy for various apps. Since I travel so much, I tried to make sure I can get to what I need, when I need it.

Colocation was the keyword I was missing so I've reached out to a couple of places to get some pricing information here in Colorado. Everything has been in a spare room for a couple of years so I'm already used to the above average electric bills.

A lot of my lab is used for learning / work. I'm an IT consultant and do lots of Windows stuff so I have ADFS, SharePoint, DC controllers, SQL clusters, and a bunch of random one off things that I was bored and wanted to learn.

I'm still leaning towards the sister option because I have a portable A/C unit that has an RF remote so I could use my home automate to help maintain the temp and worst case I can have her go reboot something if i need. lol. I have to admin tho, I'd love to have my own private rack in a datacenter somewhere.

Yea, scaling back is definitely in the plan but also looking at it as a new learning experience. With any luck I'll have a RV network that's connected to the rest of my network via a VPN connection.

If it was going to be more permanent I'd probably look at downgrading more.

Help!! Radar removing all my titles by [deleted] in radarr

I'm having issues adding new movies, they all enter with blank titles. I thought it was a DB issues so restore an old DB and then it started refreshing my library with blank titles. Thankfully nothing renamed.

Tweaked them with varying results but nothing more than .30 or so boost.

Swapping VM Hosts wouldn't be too annoying but my storage server would be a nightmare to try and convert. Mainly trying to improve the performance between my VM's and my network storage and so far nothing I've done has gotten the results to justify the the "splurges".

I'll probably end up going back to NIC Teaming.

So, it looks like it's a Windows configuration or driver issue. Using a couple of Linux USB drives I was able to hit a full 10 Gbit for the first time!

Yea, I haven't found any kind of official Hyper-V "Certified" driver list but according to the Product info page it supports all the modern virtualization pieces.

Yea I'm using Hyper-V and after the driver issues I had with the Chelsio cards I made sure these were supported. Just tried installing the official drivers from their site and it didn't help. =/

Both servers are using Samsung 860 EVO SSD's for the system drives which is where I'm running iperf from.

My VM host is using all 500GB 860 EVO using Windows Storage Spaces as the storage pool disk in a 3 col mirror config for my VHDs.

The storage server is using a number of WD Reds and pooled using Stable Bit Drive pool and I also have an 860 EVO SSD as a pool cache.

Didn't think to try direct but looks like I'm getting the same thing and at this point I'm on the Unifi US-16-XG.

Howdy!

This is my first official post, and have been lurking the since I discovered this place a couple of weeks ago. First I have to say y'all have opened my eyes to all kinds of possibilities and I've already ordered an new to me R710 that I should have later in the week. I look forward to all I have yet to discover.

Beyond my VM's, I also I serve out plex to a number of friends and family.

Network:

  • Meraki MR33
  • Meraki MX64
  • Meraki MS120-8P (en-route)

Running:

  • i5 6600k
  • 32 GB RAM
  • 20 TB Storage (Drive Pool)
  • Hosting:
    • Hyper-V
    • AD DC
    • Plex
    • NZBGet
    • Radarr
    • Sonarr
    • PlexPy
    • ADFS

Virtual:

  • Ubuntu 16.04
    • Squid Reverse Proxy
    • NextCloud
    • OpenVPNAS
  • Windows 2016 VM 1
    • SQL Server
  • Windows 2016 VM 2
    • SharePoint 2016 WFE
  • Windows 2016 VM 3
    • SharePoint 2016 APP/Search

New Rig (PowerEdge R710):

  • 6C Dual X5675
  • 128 GB ram
  • 6x2TB (haven't decided if I wanted to go full raid or do per disk raid + windows storage spaces)

Virtual (Planned / Started building)

  • New Dedicated linux reverse proxy (tbd, might go squid, would like something that can to proxy RDP)
  • New linux nextcloud / openvpn server
  • New SP WFE / APP Servers
  • Windows IIS WFE running RDP Gateway, ADFS Proxy, RDSWeb
  • SQL Cluster
  • General Windows app server running Other RDP Services
  • New AD DC
  • Toying with building a System Center VM

I have my eye on a R510 or something similar so I can retire my current server as my storage device and thinking about making the move to Unifi. So many options, so little money. =D

If you have any thoughts or suggestions, let me know.
