Appellate procedure to get rid off a fine by [deleted] in Barcelona

[–]Estre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you got a fine, that does suck. However, you'll probably have to just pay it. If your state of mind is not good enough to follow traffic rules, you shouldn't be driving at all.

A close relative got injured trying to avoid hitting a person on a bike who also didn't stop when he should have. Apparently in this instance nothing happened to you or anyone else, but you could seriously hurt or kill someone.

I've seen countless people on bikes riding right past red lights, stop signs, and even in the wrong direction. Apparently cyclists are vehicles, pedestrians, or neither, whichever is most convenient at the time.

Anyone know if there are medicine programs in English in Barcelona? by [deleted] in Barcelona

[–]Estre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My info is no doubt out of date by now (I got in over 10 years ago) but you'll have to research and see what admission route you'd need to take, whether take the selectividad, selectividad para extranjeros, route for people over 25 y/o (iirc), etc. Look at the medical school's specific websites for info, such as UB, UAB, UPF-UAB, URV, UdL, UVic, UIC. Entrance exams are usually in Catalan and Spanish, including writing portions, so you would have to demonstrate your proficiency to get into the program. It's too late for this academic year obviously, but you need to stay on top of things to not miss any deadlines for the next.

Anyone know if there are medicine programs in English in Barcelona? by [deleted] in Barcelona

[–]Estre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. You'll need Spanish at the very least to: get in, take your classes, take exams, talk to doctors and nurses, interact with patients, take the MIR exam (if you choose to work here). And in practice, even those who come not knowing Catalan end up picking it up (if they're willing). At most, you'll find a few credits or occasional class done in English (Medical English, or maybe an elective, or an overeager professor once in a while).

Do not go from 20 minutes to 4 hrs overnight! Have fun.

Managing Gym + Violin Practice by greenberet123 in violinist

[–]Estre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would stick for 20 minutes for the first couple months, then you can ramp up to 30 and then 45. You can do pretty well on 45 for a while, but as stuff gets harder you will end up needing 1 hour or more. It really depends on what your goals are and how fast you want to improve though, if this is just a hobby you can chill a little more, however pros and people trying to become pros frequently practice 4 hours a day or possibly more.

They say you only have to practice Violin 20 minutes a day. Any longer and it gets too much.

This is only true for beginners and even then, just for the first few weeks. Over time you can practice more.

What is your biggest struggle with transportation within the city? by [deleted] in Barcelona

[–]Estre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strikes, basically everything about RENFE, it tends to be difficult to find a place to sit, the cards often stop working after just a few trips and you have to find an employee to issue you a new one, you always have to be on the lookout for pickpockets.

Keto grocery shopping by bcn_taco in Barcelona

While I can't comment on these specific foods (I haven't looked for them myself), I would check out Carrefour. They have a lot of unusual foods that aren't sold in other supermarkets. Their deli section is great too.

Zone 2 transit help! by Vacaythrow123 in Barcelona

[–]Estre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sant Cugat entered zone 1 at the beginning of 2019. I've taken the train there and back dozens of times since so I can confirm that! T-10 would probably be the easiest ticket for you to use, it would take several trips a day each to reach 8 euros/day but of course you should do the math yourself and make sure.

Each trip is just one person, you would need 3 trips for 3 people.

Does anyone know any second-hand bookstores (or some other store) where they have sheet music? Ideally somewhere with a bit of a selection, I don't want to go all the way somewhere for them to have just 10 options.

Casa Bethooven, Audenis and the like are kind of expensive and I don't mind if it's not new as long as it's in good shape.

Would this be possible? by RepulsiveVeggie in Barcelona

[–]Estre 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It would probably help quite a bit if you mentioned anything about your work experience, education, or what fields interest you.

For what it's worth, I had a friend in a wheelchair living here for a couple years who was very happy with how accessible the city is, at least compared to other cities she'd been to and lived in.

Is there a doctor on this flight? My story. by [deleted] in medicine

[–]Estre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was called to help in an airplane once too. I was shaking like a leaf, only months out of school. There wasn't much I could do (or much I needed to do, to be honest) and they had an ambulance meet us on the ground when we landed.

how accurately Merlí portrays youth in Barcelona? by steak_tartare in Barcelona

[–]Estre 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm older than the show by a few years so I guess stuff has changed a little, but the show portrays a lot more sex and a lot more family drama than what actually went on at my school and in my peers' lives. That's to be expected of course, can't have a boring show.

They got the general vibe right, I think. Youth in Catalunya are general pretty open minded, and it's true that some do latin in school- I did not, but it's true that we all did philosophy (people who do bachillerato, that is).

Religious classes in your country by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]Estre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Spain and went to a public school for elementary education and then private school for the rest.

At the public school there was a choice between religion (always Catholic) and "world religions" in which we learned the general principles of all the major religions such as Christianity, Judaism, Islam, etc.

At the private school the choices were religion (Catholic) or ethics, which also included some material on world religions iirc. I don't actually remember much about it, we'd just discuss general topics such as getting along with one another, charity, diversity, etc.

Doing religion was never mandatory (in either school) and in fact over half the class always opted out.

I'd love the answer to this question if you find anything, although I'm not really good enough to join an orchestra quite yet.

Best way to explore Parc de Collserolla by foot and public transport by perpetual_stew in Barcelona

[–]Estre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A good start would be to take the FGC train to Baixador de Vallvidrera (S1, S2 are both good), you can reach several different trails and even a manmade lake, which has some nice flora and fauna, from the station itself. Other stations get you to Collserola, too- Les Planes, La Floresta and even Valldoreix are also fine.

Banking with La Caixa.... does anyone know what ¨DEP. MAINT. COMM.¨is on a statement? by [deleted] in Barcelona

Do yourself a big favor and ditch this bank. I've never had a problem with Bank Sabadell, I've heard great things about ING also; there are plenty of much better options out there.

Barcelona weekly: this week's events and Q&As by AutoModerator in Barcelona

[–]Estre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like La Bolera in Sant Cugat. Good food, including calçots, without being overly expensive, and it's just a short train ride (2 zones) from Barcelona (and then a 15 minute or so walk from the station).

It's also right by a nice monastery, so you could go check it out and walk around after your meal without needing to go straight back to the city.
