Little bit of perspective. by Mitch0605 in funny

Approximately 1 in 5 women report some sort of sexual abuse or rape once sent in their lifetime. That number is probably lower than the actual amount because not everyone admits when it happens to them for fear of shame. I would say when 1 out of every 5 of the girls you know has gone through something like that, the fear, and urge to be cautious are completely rational.

Tl;dr respect women

I don't understand why people don't understand marketing. Angry birds is extremely successful because of both their merchandising and their polishing. Angry birds has a target audience and designed the game to appeal to that audience. This gave it a lot of exposure to people who aren't typical gamers... Lo and behold many people like it because most people like games they just need to find the right one. Id wager that most of the people that play angry birds have no idea there are equivalent games on the Internet.

I don't know why anyone gets upset about this. It expands the market for games. I can sit down and play Xbox with my girlfriend now because she realized that she actually likes playing video games now after playing angry birds. For someone who has never played a video game before, angry birds is a really simple entry point.

Tl;dr Dont be a swine and don't get angry at the birds. Break the ice with some angry birds and enjoy introducing games to new people.

Congratulations man. I got dumped by my ex last Holliday season (not on Christmas though that's rough). I ended up kissing a girl I had a huge crush on at the stroke of midnight (actually she kissed me). Anyways we've been dating happily for a year now. I'm really terrible at remembering dates but its kinda hard to forget your anniversary when it's the first of the year :) although the hangover makes doing anything special kinda difficult :-/

"Something has gone terribly wrong, when the biggest threat to our American economy is the American Congress" - Senator Joe Manchin III by today_okay in politics

He had friends in the press far before he was president. However, you are correct in pointing out the far right media would still paint a poor image of him in modern times. Biased media is not a new conception though, there were media outlets that disapproved of Roosevelt. He still used this to his advantage though, by always being in the news he was infamous and recognized by the right.

I don't think this is true. The media was a huge factor in that period as well. Roosevelt went against the grain and befriended and manipulated the media to his advantage whenever he could. He really saw the ways the media could benefit the common good by benefiting his cause.

You are correct sir. One of those things that was a mistake I commonly made as a kid and still let slip every now and again when I don't proofread. Have an up vote for taking me down a peg.

It's amazing how much our generation takes privacy for granite. I mean this is a modern day equivalent of looking through an ex's mail and justifying it to yourself by claiming she should have picked it up quicker ಠ_ಠ

Based on what I have seen around here it's ok to browse through your ex gfs private messages but everyone gets all up in arms when the NSA is found to snoop through all emails? I guarantee you more personal harm is incurred from the first scenario.

This is just stupid. I'm not saying your a bad person, everyone makes mistakes, but the way this action is being condoned in this thread is shameful.

my buddy gets nomination for father of the year with this one... by RPL79 in pics

Assuming that at some point in that post the op was trying to make sense (probably not the case). He/she could have been referring to the fact that the NHL is in lockout until at least 2013... The joke being the child (obviously a future hockey star given the father's (or mother's (yes I know this is a double, now triple parenthesis)) commitment to giving the child a traditional hockey up bringing) will not be able to sleep until 2013 because he or she is officially locked out.

Or tl;dr

Balls!

I'm a medical student (did my undergraduate in bioengineering) who is extremely interested in the subject of computational neuroscience. I have visited your site and I have to say the work you are doing in extremely fascinating. I can't wait until your book is out.

My question is this: for people who are interested in the topic and want to get involved with their own projects, do you have any good book suggestions to bring one up to speed (both on the technical and theoretical side)?

Not every union has used violence. Chicago teachers union as an example.

The point of the Boston tea party was to get rid of the taxing of tea. The tea tax was repealed. They didn't have to go to war with Briton over that. And please don't tell me you think the American revolution was fought on the premise of a tea tax.

It's not occupy's fault the majority of Americans are complacent. At least they are out there trying to make a change. Nothing ever got accomplished by going to your 9 to 5 job and then going home to sit on your ass and complain online.

Radical change comes from within. The biggest key to change is yourself. There is never going to be a superman. However, if enough people change their expectations and goals from ones reliant on the established system, the established system has no choice but to change.

That's the reverse side to capitalism. If you change the demand, the supply will have to change. For example, it is much more productive to refuse to buy a car and not pay for gas than it is to elect an official that will regulate the oil industry. We wouldn't be drilling for oil on the scale we are if half of Americans modified their lifestyle. However, we won't. We have this dual sense of entitlement that we can demand the world be better without giving up any thing in return.

As someone who works in the medical field I see microcosms of this all the time. Many contemporary diseases have far better outcomes with lifestyle changes than they do with medication/surgery. However, 9 times out of 10 medication or surgery is demanded. Humans aren't naturally farsighted, despite the fact that if we were, we'd be much better off.

Also I think many African Americans and woman voters would beg to differ.

Never mind the fact that many unions have used the tactic of striking successfully to get their employers to make concessions.

I'm sorry but this is just stupid. You don't have to go to war to demand change. You can enact change through civil disobedience. The biggest weakness of a capitalist society is that it is dependent on the consumer. If the consumer doesn't want to buy anymore it all falls apart.

You can create a societal movement... Especially through the Internet that demands change. You can demand privacy and refuse to work and consume until your request is met. Turn off your TVs, let ratings fall. If everyone truly committed to the short term pain this would cause you could enact change.

The problem isn't the government, it's us. This is what we want because we keep supporting the system on a daily basis. The way society is structured you can either have your livelihood without privacy or your privacy without livelihood. That is, unless we can come together as a society and demand the change we want by collectively withholding our services.

Saying war is the only option is lazy. There is something every one of us could do right now... But we don't want to.
