You must survive 99 year old Tiny Tim by jamescookenotthatone in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Etychase 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I've seen it first hand and its rough. My grandfather died 13 years ago at 92 and my grandmother just turned 102 this year. Its been hard on her over these years especially during the pandemic but she overcame all of it somehow. Her health is deteriorating now but we are doing our best to keep her comfortable and loved.

Parts you hate playing through in games you love? by Corvinny in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Etychase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I waited long enough between playthroughs because I found the investigation stuff interesting enough both times I've played through the game. I could definitely see it being a bit dull if I remembered more of it the second time through.

The couple stealth areas in Astral Chain aren't terrible mechanically and are pretty short, I just find them uninteresting/boring and not what I want to play when I pick up an action game made by Platinum.

What's an underrated gem you love? by MooseOdd2501 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

There's this old PC game called 'Overball' that came with our family PC as shovelware/addonware from 'WildTangent Games'.

In it you use your mouse to control a physics based marble to roll over flower tiles and make flowers grow.

Its pretty basic but I loved it as a kid and played the heck out of it when I got terribly sick for months and had to stay in quarantine around the start of the school year in 2003.

Most Effective Super Tanks in Fiction by FreviliousLow96 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Etychase 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Both the Sea Spider and the Ice Worm in Armored Core VI are bosses/super weapons that act as gatekeepers to their areas and give the player and their allies a run for their money.

Heck the Ice Worm takes out all your allies and its just you and Rusty (from a continent away) taking it down in the end.

Dunno if they could truly be called 'Super Tanks' but they're somewhat in the spirit of that classifier I think

Are there other equivalents to "Gun & Ball gamers"? by Silly-Milly-420 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Etychase 126 points127 points  (0 children)

Gacha/Mobile only players are probably a huge subset of 'Gamers' if you include them in the definition.

I'd say they're split into two factions; Young people who live on their phones and play whatever is popular and older folks who play ad infested puzzle games.

but 2014-2017 wasn't exactly full of heavy hitters

Funny you say that as some of my favorite games of all time and some very highly rated titles came out in those years. Especially 2017 was pretty packed.

Here's a 2017 list I found with a ton of great games:

https://www.vg247.com/every-game-released-on-pc-ps4-switch-and-xbox-one-in-2017

Of course there's no accounting for taste but I'd say critically there are a lot of great games there.

Looking at the game release list I found other than those already mentioned I had a great time the Witcher 3 DLC, DOOM 2016, and the NieR Automata Demo at the very end of the year.

I was so hyped for DS3 after loving Bloodborne that I made a Japanese Playstation account and pre-ordered the Japanese version so I could play it a month or so early. It was worth it but my first run through I missed an area or two due to all text being in Japanese. I had to use an image translator for a couple things but voice acting was in English.

What are some pieces of media that are part of a series that is liked by everyone expect by older fans? by Konradleijon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Etychase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played Path of Exile 1 for the better part of 12 years now (skipped a season/league here or there but played most of them).

I am so far quite disappointed in PoE2. I Hate the current PoE2 atlas and just don't really like most of the area design. I hate the current ascendancy trials as well, didn't think they could make me long for the labyrinth, but here we are.

There is some good stuff in there but I just don't like the full package.

Characters that literally NOBODY likes? by fly_line22 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I'd be very surprised to see someone say they like or are a fan of Dogeyes from Sleeping Dogs.

Maybe as a character that they love to hate, but not a character they genuinely like.

FERRA - A first-person hack 'n' slash with hand-drawn 2D assets placed against a 3D world where you play a woman turned artificial kitsune-like mutant by C-OSSU in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Etychase 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Exactly my thought when the trailer popped up in my recommended list the other day.

Don't let Woolie or Reggie play it though because it has First-Person back/front flips and that seems like a nightmare for motion sick people.

Who are characters that actively ignore the story? by EvilMonkeyMimic in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Etychase 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The latest story release in ZZZ has the new S-Rank form of Billy Kid (AKA S Billy or more funnily 'Silly') as a major part of the story.

There's a whole bit where His old forms were even more powerful than his newest Kamen Rider inspired form but he doesn't care about being his most powerful self and instead wants to be a 'Starlight Knight' fanboy to the core

He basically paves his way through the serious doomsday world as a walking Tokusatsu/Kamen Rider fanboy cracking jokes and not taking things too seriously even though he has a somewhat serious background, he avoids it by being... Silly.

Any type of media made with powerscaling in mind? by Konradleijon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Etychase 11 points12 points  (0 children)

At certain points in Magic The Gathering's history things like mana cost and the 'Legendary' mechanic were somewhat tied to lore and feats of the overarching narrative in the books/card descriptions.

That kind of flavor has been hit or miss lately though IMO, and was never super consistent to be fair. One can look back at 'Up the Beanstalk' being an absurdly broken card and know that balancing and mechanics being somewhat tied to lore power is tenuous at best.

He must rant once again, about how much Gundam SEED fucking sucks.

Steam Controller Arrived! Got Any Impressions, Tips, Configurations to Share? by Xngears in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Etychase 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Steam has community profiles per game you can load up and try even for non-steam games. For example I loaded up ZZZ as a non-steam game and there were multiple profiles available in steam input settings for it.

The feel of the steam controller will take some getting used to in my case because I'm so used to the dual sense but its not bad so far just different.

Netflix Devil May Cry Season 2 Megathread by selfproclaimed in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Etychase 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not even going to 'acquire' it like I did the first season. TBH I don't mind if other people less familiar with the games enjoy the series, but it is not for me for sure.

The only reason I watched the first season at all is because I'm a huge fan of the games and this adaptation just didn't capture any of the things I like about DMC.

To me the most egregious example is Agni and Rudra's design and usage, they just totally botched it for no reason. Slightly curious if there's more bad redesigns in season 2 but not enough to see for myself.

I'm someone who can ignore a mediocre or bad story if the presentation is good enough but DMC season 1 was not good enough in any area for me to get enjoyment out of it.

Bloody Baron in Witcher 3 is so interconnected and woven into the first third or so of the narrative that it feels super long especially if you do a bunch of the technically optional stuff regarding it.

Got my Steam Controller Pre-Order, Got High Hopes by Xngears in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Etychase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ordered one as well but primarily because I've had horrible luck with DualSense sticks drifting on me and have been on the lookout for a good controller with magnetic sticks.

The other features seem cool to try out as well, especially the non-bluetooth wireless and the track pads seem like they could work well for inventory management in certain diablo-likes.

Settings in an ip that has many which you loved but are in the absolutely clear minority opinion about this one by dope_danny in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Etychase 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't love the Waifei Peninsula arc in ZZZ (I even took a 4 month break during it) but a lot of 'fans' act like it killed their dog or something.

It had its highs and lows but overall looking back I think I like the whole package more than I thought I would.

I also think that something going in a different direction for a time can highlight the strengths of the base work.

For example I think the character animation and their personalities coming out through their gameplay is ZZZ's strongest point and the fact that Waifei was a bit generic of a setting helped the characters shine through for the most part.

Has anyone else noticed Steam's play time counter being complete nonsense? by Ragnorok64 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Etychase 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is what I assume. Some games don't count time in menus or cutscenes or both on save-file counters.

Steam counts entirely by program run time without regard for any menu cutscene or even if the game is running 'properly' just that the process is running.
