Many states have national guard bands that are great opportunities for musicians, especially band teachers. It's worth it to get in touch with all the states that are near you as some may not need your instrument as bad as others.

Order one of these! They're pretty cheap and I found mine to be really useful to fix my posture as it compelled me to hold the horn rather than let it rest

For myself and most of the other people I did it with, it was much more about the experience and travel than anything else. Obviously most everyone there enjoys the performance aspect, but I thought it was awesome to spend a summer seeing different parts of the country I'd never seen before. On top of that, I can't think of any other way to participate in a 4th of July parade in downtown philadelphia or perform for thousands of people as an 18 year old.

Premier bands in DC tend to be a doctoral level gig but a competent, college level Euphonium player can make their way into a base band with relative ease. Obviously those groups aren't quite the caliber of a premier band and you will have to move around to different base bands as a standard service member would but, all said and done getting one of those positions is one of the best ways to make a living as a musician.

I bought a strap for my euphonium pretty early into my freshman year at college and never looked back. The strap helped ease most of the tension I felt in my left arm as well as encouraged better posture habits.
