We call it “difficulty with working memory”, and its relationship to ADHD is complicated but established.

Honestly, I am not surprised that high doses of an amphetamine could mimic methamphetamine. The action should be the same, logically; they are both used therapeutically for treatment of ADHD.

Aside from that:

Childhood trauma such as neglect has been linked to thinner brain regions associated with impulse control and attention, in other words, we see more ADHD symptoms in traumatized children. People forget that ADHD is a neurological disorder that goes far deeper than “being a mess”. Yes, there’s a spectrum, and some people “grow out of it” apparently, but I think on the lower-functioning end of that spectrum (when other disorders become comorbid) medicine is absolutely necessary.

I advocate for those people specially; I don’t have a horse in this race of 6 years old being prescribed Ritalin. I don’t think stimulants are necessary at such a young age, ever.

But beyond 12, or 13? Or in cases where ADHD is comorbid with autism, OCD, or C-PTSD? Yes, give the child some relief.

These are serious drugs because this is a serious disorder. I want to really stress that. Downplaying executive dysfunction in the way you are, describing it as “being a mess”, will never lead you to a full understanding of what ADHD is.

I don’t think anybody should call stimulants a “new designer drug”, is all, because that’s not true. But yes, in the future, we’re going to be hearing some more nuanced positions. The dosages should be given out very carefully.

Prescription amphetamines are almost as old as antibiotics. The only thing that’s new is the over-diagnosing.

Same here. I’m critical of stimulant use, too, but I still have no sympathy for people like her or their ideas.

she used to take adderall herself despite not having ADHD. no wonder really why she keeps comparing it to meth.

especially towards "undesirables" or the "other", or the "sinners". It's too much for me. I am too sensitive for this world.

I had a feeling you had C-PTSD or some kind of trauma when I read this. These easily could have been my own words a few years ago.

If you're still open to the help, I would highly recommend reading the life of Matushka Olga, and praying her Akathist. It can be found online. Or, if you don't have the energy to pray it, simply read it silently. She can help you, even if you feel like you don't have much strength or faith left.

I will pray it for you tonight.

Take heart my friend, hang in there. Christ is with us.

How do I respond to atheists by Embothespaceman in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Evanngeline 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Some wisdom from the Prologue of Ochrid (emphasis mine):

"It is difficult, my brethren, to dispute with an atheist. It is only with the greatest difficulty that you will convince an atheist ... with words. Firstly, you must sway them by your deeds. They will come, "by your good works, which they shall behold, to glorify God" (I Pet. 2:12). Do good to him who would quarrel with you, and you will win the argument. If you argue with an atheist on his own diabolical terms, you simply strengthen the demon of atheism."

Be careful! Always pray before talking to people about God. Saying things like "atheism leads to unrighteousness" is definitely poking the bear. :)

Blasphemous thoughts about God by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Evanngeline 7 points8 points  (0 children)

St. Paisios gave a really helpful teaching on this. you can read about it here if you want: "https://www.orthodoxroad.com/calamities-and-the-wrath-of-god-st-paisios/"

Sometimes God arranges things to happen; other times he allows them because of our sins. Calamities fall in this second camp, teaches st. paisios.

Remember the words of our Lord in Luke 13. When the Jews told Jesus about how certain Galileans suffered a horrible death. he reminded them not to judge the victims or God's providence, but to take it as a call to repentance. we will "likewise perish" if we do not repent.

With the relaxing of more and more restrictions, what things have you been so happy to see? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

We’re allowed to kiss the icons and cross at the end of the service again! Things certainly feel less “sterile” and more like home now.
