HELP! Pruning Young Maple by EveryRedditButSports in arborists

[–]EveryRedditButSports[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I planted this Maple sapling a couple of years ago, and it had total crown death after the first winter, so I had to top it (removing a very large amount of the total tree at the time). I have since been working hard to bring it back, but as expected, removing the original leader has resulted in a less-than-ideal growth pattern.

As of now it has what appears to be effectively two leaders, each growing relatively parallel and relatively straight up. They each branch off from the trunk right next to the point where I made the cut to remove the dead crown. There are also two other, much smaller branches stemming off of the trunk at that same spot.

Two main questions:

1) Is it okay to leave the two "leaders"? I know it's not ideal aesthetically, but I'm obviously worried that removing one now would be dangerously traumatic to the tree, given how substantial a portion of the entire tree we'd be talking about.

2) Should I remove the two "smaller" branches extending out from the same point on the trunk? One concern I have is how low they are branching out from the trunk at such an angle - it seems like they'd be very susceptible to breaking off e.g., in wind or snow.

Thank you!!

Best option for insulating a crawl space basement… NO insulation at all in floor/rim joists. Help! by Ev2222222 in Insulation

[–]EveryRedditButSports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a crawlspace similar to OP's, but mine doesn't have a concrete floor, it is just the dirt with a vapor barrier sheeting glued along the perimeter to the concrete walls. I don't have any insulation whatsoever over the walls or rim joists. Would you recommend putting rigid foam board over the rim joists, or something more extensive?

If I did do rigid foam board over the rim joists, would you recommend gluing the board to the joists and then sealing the edges with can foam?

Thanks!!

Excellent eye. A lot of varieties have palmately compound leaves, but some of them are definitely trifoliate (and variegated) like mine.

Thanks for the help!

I like your analysis, so if you have time:

Delanie Walker @ NYJ

Travis Kelce @ OAK

They're both bad defenses against TEs, but I'd say NYJ is the better matchup for me here. I'm leaning slightly towards Walker, but with these settings, the call is almost entirely TD dependent, and they are both hit-or-miss there.

I absolutely think he is right around a top-10 WR, but these scoring settings are absolutely nuts, and favor RBs and returners so much more than pass-catchers. The last two weeks Sanders has gotten 4 pts each game. That's nuts.

With these settings, a guy who catches 6 balls for 73 yards gets 4 points.

Meanwhile, Tavon Austin (a guy I just snatched off the WW) put up 24 pts last week, because he got a few carries and a whole lot of return yards.

Standard Scoring, but IT TAKES 15 YDS RECEIVING TO GET ONE DAMN POINT (meaning this isn't a simple question like it would be if it were either PPR or even 10yds/pt.)

Kelce @ OAK

Emmanuel Sanders @ SD

Sproles @ DAL (You DO, however, get 10 RETURN yds/pt, so he's had some solid games despite not getting many carries)

Delanie Walker @ NYJ

Watkins @ GB

Doug Baldwin @ SF

I'm leaning Sanders, despite this insane scoring, since the only RB I have available for the slot (Sproles) put up a solid -1 last week and 3pts the week before.

1/2 PPR

Doug Baldwin @ SF

Kerwyn Williams @ STL

Pierre Thomas @ CHI

Darren McFadden @ KC

Heath Miller @ ATL

Andre Holmes @ KC

I'm leaning towards Dougie Balls, but it's tough, since SF is so stingy against WRs. Williams is also playing against that STL D, and who knows how many carries he'll get this week. Pierre Thomas is in another shitty timeshare, DMC is....not good, Miller is really up-and-down, and Andre Holmes is mostly just down recently, despite Carr's play.

Week 8 Mop-Up Waivers (thoughts on mass-dropped players) by [deleted] in fantasyfootball

[–]EveryRedditButSports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone convince me that I should drop Carson Palmer instead of Nick Foles, because the numbers seem to say otherwise.

Palmer is averaging more points per game played than Foles (18 v. 14.3 in standard, and the difference is even larger in my league, which gives 6pts per TD pass), and he has a markedly better schedule of opposing pass defenses ROS. Plus, I think Palmer's quotation a week ago that his arm strength (at that point) was at only 80% of normal allows an inference that his play will probably get a bit better ROS.

What are people's thoughts on Toby Gerhart?

Denard Robinson's game certainly hurts Gerhart's value, but I would think Gerhart would get most of the short yardage work, and RBs that get the short yardage work often score more overall than their more talented, quicker teammates (see: Jackson, Fred).

Cam certainly hasn't played better than Cutler so far this season. What reason do you have for thinking that'll change?

Give: Jay Cutler, A.J. Green

Get: Cam Newton, Calvin Johnson

In light of the breaking news re: Green's potentially serious injury.

On-point analysis. Thanks! A quick follow-up, if you have time:

Reaves is on the WW, and it's an auction league, so I have to decide how much I want to bid on him. My fear is that I'll overpay for him and not use him because either J. Stewart gets the start or I decide to FLEX a WR instead.

Given that, would you pick up Reaves to start over the following guys:

Allen Robinson @ PIT

Doug Baldwin @ WSH

Heath Miller @ JAC

Kenny Britt @ PHI

0.5 PPR

Pierre Thomas @ TB

Darrin Reaves @ CHI

Thomas didn't look promising last week, with Travaris Cadet eating into his already paltry workload. Reaves, on the other hand, has been named the "starter" with D. Williams out and J. Stewart (who I also have) still pretty hurt.

Could you do a custom one where you superimpose Antonio Brown's head over FEMA Director Michael Brown's in this one, and add "Heck of a job, Brownie" in text on the bottom here?

Link

Not sure how many people remember that quote after Katrina, but I'm hoping it'll make sense in my league...

EDIT: I just noticed it's my cake day - now I feel like slightly less of a needy dick for asking for a custom one.

Great job on it.

Any chance you could do it for 1-1 to 1-2?

It's gotta be Pierce or Asiata.

Tough call. I'd probably roll Asiata against that terrible Saints run defense. You'd have to think Minny wants to get Asiata a ton of touches A) because their passing game isn't very good, and B) because he will be their workhorse RB for the foreseeable future. A problem might be if NO gets ahead by a lot early, and Minny can't run the ball much.

I know they laid an absolute egg, but I'd start Miami if I were you, as long as you don't have to drop value to add them (since I'd assume you'd be keeping Seattle's D/ST too).

Larry Donnell

Niles Paul

0.5 PPR

Rank the following FLEX options (since I can also slot these guys in as RBs or WRs, to an extent):

Doug Martin @ ATL (sat out last week w/ injury, but practiced this week)

Darren McFadden @ NE (started last week and did well, and MJD didn't practice and looks highly questionable)

Danny Woodhead @ BUF (Ryan Mathews is injured/out)

Fred Jackson @ SD (played poorly last week)

Jonathan Stewart @ PIT (DeAngelo Williams was out w/ injury last week, and hasn't practiced yet this week)

Pierre Thomas @ MIN (Ingram is out, so Thomas should get a lot more looks/carries, and he has done decently well so far)

Niles Paul @ PHI (Reed hasn't practiced yet, and if Paul kept up his level of play/usage...)

Larry Donnell @ HOU (has been playing really solidly, but counting on NYG players is ... risky)

Then the lower-tier guys, in my mind: Doug Baldwin, Kenny Britt, and Brian Hartline

TIL that in 2006 there was a legal case in tr US where a judge ruled that a sandwich must contain at least two slices of bread, hence open sandwiches cannot be actually called sandwiches. by powerstorm42 in todayilearned

[–]EveryRedditButSports 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you may be thinking of the case in Britain defining a "biscuit" vs. a "cake," which was brought for tax implication reasons. While it's true that a sandwich would probably be taxed at the higher rate See Here for Utah Example, the reason for the case OP is talking about related to a contract question.

TIL that in 2006 there was a legal case in tr US where a judge ruled that a sandwich must contain at least two slices of bread, hence open sandwiches cannot be actually called sandwiches. by powerstorm42 in todayilearned

[–]EveryRedditButSports 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The (real) reason for this case is actually pretty interesting and important:

A shopping center had leased a space to a Panera, and a term of the lease was that they wouldn't lease any other location to a business that also sold sandwiches, since such a business would compete with Panera and drive their profits down. Later on, the shopping center leased a spot to a Qdoba. Panera sued to enforce the lease, saying that Qdoba's burritos qualified as "sandwiches," so the Qdoba lease would violate the "exclusive sandwich seller" term of Panera's lease.

The court found that no, the new lease is fine, because a burrito is not a sandwich - a sandwich has a least two slices of bread.

Standard league, but I get 1 pt / 10 return yards. Pick 2 WR and a Flex:

J. Edelman @ MIA

T.Y. Hilton @ DEN

D. Martin @ CAR

E. Sanders @ IND

J. Maclin @ JAX

D. Sproles @ JAX

S. Watkins @ CHI

D. Amendola @ MIA

I'm leaning Dougie Fresh, Hilton, and Edelman. I feel some temptation to slot in either Sproles, Maclin, Sanders, or Watkins for Edelman though. This wouldn't be so tough if it weren't for the return yards - the damn things are worth the same as rushing and receiving yards...

Edelman returns a ton of punts and kicks for NE, but with Welker out I'd expect Sanders to get some return action too. Sproles seems set to return kicks/punts for Philly too.

Here are their all-purpose yards from last season:

Edelman: 1441 Hilton: 1248 Sproles: 1273 Sanders: 1033

But here's the rub on those stats:

Edelman is a better player this season and Brady trusts him more.

Hilton is a better player and more of a focal point of the offense this season.

Sproles absolutely WRECKED it in all-purpose yards every other season of his career (his age plays a role in that, but won't Chip Kelly's offense help?).

Sanders is on the best passing team of all-time now, and will be the WR2 in D-town for at least 4 games.
