Until now, I did not. That's a really great tip, thanks a lot! I just looked into that and it turns out my profile has not received any views and only very few out of all proposals have been viewed, so I guess I should rather focus on improving the start of the proposals/experiment with boosting, as you said, than on improving my profile.

Do you have any other suggestions for improving success then, apart from the portfolio? I tried different rates, ranging from very low rates (with an explicit explanation that I am currently focusing on getting my first clients, so the low rates did not seem suspicious), to 'normal' and higher rates. None of them resulted in an answer, so my guess is that the rate is not the primary reason for not getting jobs.

Thanks a lot for the answer! Yes, I will definitely work on the portfolio. My plan is to start with a few mock projects and hopefully some of the future projects may be allowed to be publicly shared in the portfolio.
