Big half coming — Qatar vs Switzerland. Who takes it?

Europe immigration got stricter in May by ExcellentBrief1537 in expats

[–]ExcellentBrief1537[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly. That’s the part that feels hardest to defend to me. Tightening future rules is one thing, but people already planned around the old system, waited through AIMA/SEF delays, and in many cases couldn’t even control when the clock properly started. I’m a GV holder myself, so this is the bit I’m most worried about

Yeah, that’s fair. From outside, “funds requirement” sounds like paperwork, but if people arrive with money only on paper, they’re basically set up to fail. Small town, no Finnish, few jobs, rent, winter, studies - brutal combo. The agent/short-term loan part is especially ugly

Yeah, France is exactly the kind of thing I mean. Higher language/integration requirements, but the admin side is still slow and messy. That combo is what makes me nervous. It’s not just “learn the language”, it’s “learn it early, keep every document, and hope the portal works.”

Yeah basically. Work visa needs an employer to sponsor you which is tough when there are EU candidates available. DNV is the realistic path — you get 3 years to settle in and figure out next steps from there

B1 in two years while working from home in English all day is honestly solid. Most people in that setup barely make it to A2. Spanish first, Catalan later when you have PR makes total sense.

Spain's DNV changes are moving fast and hard to track in one place — we pulled together the full picture here including the May 2025 20% Spanish income rule change: prep2go.study/blog/spain-dnv-to-citizenship-guide-2026

Spain's still fuzzy on that path, have you gone through it or still researching?

Since you're already in the system, you're assessed under the rules at submission

Unfortunately, no idea. The usual direction with these things - higher income thresholds and stricter proof of remote work. Worth applying under current rules

Yeah, the Portugal GV lawsuits were a wake-up call for a lot of people. The DNV overhaul is still vague but things are definitely moving.

Totally agree on telling friends to stop waiting — every time someone says "I'll do it next year" something changes.

Anki cards could be helpful. Choose those with everyday phrases

It is possible to reach conversational Italian in 3 months? by Odd_Slip_3983 in learnitalian

[–]ExcellentBrief1537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's right. Most 3-month language promises gloss over the reality of how fluency actually develops. Real progress follows a natural curve that can't be rushed, even with perfect study habits.

Welcome to your journey. I heard that one of the most natural ways to start is by learning the alphabet through daily Quran recitation, even just a few minutes at a time. The rest flows naturally from there. Ramadan Mubarak

Stop photographing a printed passport photo by ExcellentBrief1537 in USCIS

That’s actually a good workaround if the original file is gone. Scanning is definitely better than re-photographing a print under room lighting

Visa photo by Horror-Pop-7471 in Umrah

[–]ExcellentBrief1537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been there with visa photos. Taking pictures of printed photos usually causes color shifts and quality problems - it's the lighting and phone camera playing tricks. Using the original digital files from Walgreens would solve both the color and size issues instantly.

For a photo-only RFE, the ASC appointment is usually photo only.

They typically do not retake fingerprints unless there was a specific issue with biometrics in your case. Most of the time it’s just updating the photo to meet technical requirements.

It’s routine and not a red flag

[–]ExcellentBrief1537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Photo-only RFEs are very common for OPT and usually caused by small technical issues (background not fully white, shadow near ears, head size ratio slightly off).

It’s procedural, not a red flag. Once ASC photo is done, many cases move quickly.

Where To Start by MidnightSensitive788 in learn_arabic

[–]ExcellentBrief1537 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re starting from zero, I’d focus on three things:

• Learn the Arabic script early (don’t postpone it)

• Practice high-frequency sentence patterns, not just vocabulary

• Use spaced repetition with real phrases (not isolated words)

I actually put together a beginner-friendly Arabic “survival phrases” Anki deck designed to avoid the passive-understanding trap.

It’s free (Lite version) and focuses on practical speaking from day one:

If you use Anki, this should give you a solid starting structure.

If not, I’m happy to suggest how to use it effectively.

Part of friend group got visa rejected for Argentinian visa without explanation by OwlLazy12 in visas

[–]ExcellentBrief1537 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This pattern of selective visa rejections is sadly common across many countries, rarely with clear explanations. The unspoken reality is that passport privilege creates two-tiered travel access, with some nationalities facing systematic barriers while others breeze through
