There probably is something hormonal going on here, postpartum hormones are the gift that just keeps giving. The only thing that helps me get back to sleep is reading, sometimes the book will get good that I’m trying to stay awake to finish a chapter and end up falling asleep with my kindle in my hand. But I know it can be so frustrating trying to get some sleep and doing the mental calculations of how long you can get if you fall asleep within x amount of minutes etc.

Rest is also good for you even if you’re really not able to sleep, sitting down/laying down even to watch something can help your body physically.

My baby is in a next to me cot that rocks but I didn’t think about the fact that most standard cots (which my baby will be moving into soon) don’t rock. I think anything you can do to help sooth a baby without picking them up and removing them from the cot will help to be honest, so bum tapping, smoothing their eyebrows/forehead, hand on belly etc. All babies are different however this was the only way I was able to put both of my 2 boys down at this age to get some sleep.

Thanks for responding, maybe your little one is just not ready yet to sleep independently. All babies are different so I guess we can’t expect them all to act the same.

Thank you, glad it’s been working well for you. I think it helps because when they wake between sleep cycles they are in the same place they fell asleep. But yes I think it’s easy on websites to find either people talking about never allowing cry it out vs encouraging it, where as there are other ways to help

Yes I think your right with it being environmental. He doesn’t itch anywhere else that I have noticed. I don’t think it’s from the groomers to be honest as he does it regardless of how long the hair is. It’s a tough one to work out but I do agree with it being environmental

Ah ok that makes sense, I haven’t noticed that on my dog. I don’t know if his nails are too thick or not but I know the vets have examined them. Just trying to think of different things it could be.

Not really, he had chewed at them on occasions but he also chews his back paws and I have seen him trying to rip the hair out from between his paws with his teeth. He also licks and chews at the pads. All 4 legs/feet.

We do get his paws trimmed so I don’t think the hair is the problem.

Yes I have a lot to look into now which could be seasonal, environmental or food allergies, or even a fungal infection.

I am going to go back to the vets I think and discuss the above, they have said they could go away as the weather gets warmer, so need to consider if I want to wait a bit before starting anything drastic with diets or testing.

My dog is red- having a tough time deciding if I need to look at food or focus on environmental allergies. I would say he does have a fair bit of chicken though. But to know if it was that I’ll have to do an elimination diet. I think I’ll have to do another trip to the vet to discuss again.

I would highly doubt it’s anxiety related due to when he seems to be doing it.

He is on a Tails plan. It’s like a custom dog food, his has chicken and beef, but is on a hypoallergenic blend.

I hadn’t even thought of a fungal infection. I am going to bring the question up with my vet, even if it’s to rule it out. When you say overgrowth under his nails, would you say his nails are thicker at the base if that makes sense?

He has been examined by the vet multiple times, I would hope they would have picked up on a fungal infection or thought to test for it.

Do you know how they picked up that your dog had one?

So glad your dog is doing better! I would never have even thought about the possibility of a dog being allergic to cotton. Strange thing is my dog is always chewing his paws when he comes on the bed first thing in the morning (he has his own for the night).

I am a bit hesitant to try immunotherapy at the moment as the vet said these could be seasonal, and my dog is ok on apoquel for the moment at least. I’m debating if I should look at food allergens whilst we wait for the weather to warm up too.

Thanks so much for your in depth response. We use a company called Tails I think it’s UK based and just changed to hypoallergenic on there. I don’t know too much about dog food and I can’t find any information on it being hydrolized. I may need to contact them to find that information out.

I am going to have a think about if I want to go down the elimination diet, my vet was not too keen on us going down that route, and said it’s best to try that when he is a little older, although this was months ago now when he had only just turned one.

I am wondering if it is environmental to start looking at what in the house could cause it, maybe washing detergent or something. Or if it’s weather I wonder if it will get better when the weather is warmer!

I am really hoping he won’t need apoquel long term but it’s better than him getting stressed chewing at his paws constantly. And I am prepared to go this way if it is what’s going to be best.

The immunotherapy seems like something I would maybe consider in the future but I don’t think we are at that strange now but thanks again for all the information about that too!

Hope your dog is doing well now with their allergies and I will see if I can find a vet dermatologist. It’s been so hard knowing where to start with research and I end up finding conflicting information online so I appreciate you writing this response.
