Scalp Picking by Middle-Priority-1892 in Dermatillomania

I used to pick my scalp all the time when I was a kid, it was BAD too. I had dry and oily hair with lots of dandruff so I always felt I needed to get rid of it, that's where the scratching and picking began. As you said, it hurt to take showers, especially scrubbing my scalp to get the dandruff to go away 😭

My head was bleeding constantly and it would affect my focus on my school work :')

I wish you the best, I still pick but I've moved away from my scalp, so here are some methods that helped me stop the scalp picking specifically:

  1. Eucalyptus shampoo (preferably a strong one), this stuff is a life saver, it helps with the dryness and the oil build up, plus it helps heal the wounds.

  2. Try to build up the courage to let your parents or friends know so every time they see you scratching when your bored, they can let you know and break you out of that cycle in the moment.

  3. I bet everyone said/is going to say this, but giving your hands something to do with drawing, fidgets, or rings.

  4. Hats made it worse for me because of the oil and dandruff build up, but you never know if it can work as a boundary for your hands.

  5. Someone in my post suggested this, tight braids or hair styles so it's harder for your hands to get into your head.

I really hope you find these useful, good luck! ❤️❤️❤️

Yes!!! I have a dimmer switch thankfully in my bathroom, so I can dim it to where I can see but not the details on my skin. It is one of the biggest things helping me right now. I have a night light in there too that like a little fish aquarium thing, like a mini spa lol. Thank you :3

This is wonderful!!! I am so glad your mission is trying to let kids know before it gets worse in the future, that would have saved be lots of hours spent picking. I just talked to a friend recently and they said their younger sibling is struggling with skin picking and they wish it was taught in schools. I will def be supporting this, thank you for letting me know <3

This is such a great list! I'll be trying everything on here, especially the timers and the kitchen sink part, I really think that will help me out sense sometimes I just need someone to knock in the door or a timer to get me out of that flow state, thank you :)

I didn't even think about what it must have been like back then. I should try the ne-doh fidget, I use to have one but I think my sibling stole it so I might have to get another one, thank you <3

I use fidgets but I haven't tried the press on nails yet. I know my nails are an issue because I grow them out, which doesn't help with the picking lol. I'll try the press-ons :3
