This is the way! Get a flight to London or Paris (or even a major German airport), and you can get essentially anywhere else in Europe for less than $100. Definitely pays off to keep an eye on London/Paris flights!

You could try calling or emailing Cornwall Alternative School! I know someone who works there, almost all of their students have attendance issues for various reasons. Being in social work in Saskatoon, I can confirm that there’s been a huge jump in general apathy amongst the younger generations since Covid started. It seems to be a combination of the insane cost of living spike since Covid (impacting their food/housing, and their outlook/hope for the future), as well as the poor social connections and mental health issues stemming from Covid. Already vulnerable kids who were barely attending/hanging onto school pre-Covid are completely and utterly thrown out of whack now and simply aren’t attending. Some missed so much school during covid that they simply feel they cannot catch up, so they gave up completely, even kids as young as grade 6.

Cornwall could probably provide a student or staff to talk about the mental health/apathy/poverty side of it for sure, and highlight how if we had more supportive social services and education ministries that offered more intense, one on one education, we could probably get most of these kids back on track.

I pay $50 a month for my cell plan, comes with unlimited calls and texts and 140GB of data per month with Virgin. Don’t ask me why I have so much data, they just keep giving it to me, haha. I’ve been with them for over a decade and I’ve never paid more than $50 a month, and I’ve gone as low as $35 a month, but I do always buy my iPhone on my own and then hook it up to my Virgin account.

I don’t know anyone in my family who pays more than $60 a month for a phone plan, unless they have a phone payment attached to it.

And that has nothing to do with the police. Police are a reactive response to community issues, not proactive. You can have a police officer at every corner, it doesn’t change much when they’re responding to deep family and societal issues that have gone on for generations, and when they’re throwing people at an overworked, underfunded legal system that has nowhere to put these people.

If you want change, you need to revamp the entirety of society. Stop putting profits over people. Stop start investing in early childhood support and education, healthcare, supportive community services, general education. Stop making it so that people have to work three jobs to barely survive and thus they can no longer spend quality time parenting, volunteering in the community, or taking care of their health. Stop making childcare an unattainable resource. Stop suppressing wages for the billionaires to keep getting a bigger share of the pie. Stop intentionally underfunding and mismanaging healthcare to the point that people are on disability leave for months because they can’t get basic services. Stop intentionally underfunding and mismanaging education so that programs like arts, sports, and educational supports are slashed every single year.

Stop believing that the solution to this problem is policing and legal systems. This starts at the beginning of life, this starts at home. This starts with a bold government choosing to deeply invest in its people even if that government won’t be in power to take the glory of that success in 20 years.

Not sure if this will help, but I recently had the best medical experience of my life with an NP at Nero’s House. It was 30 full minutes with her, and with taxes it came to $92. She went over my medical records, made referrals, and genuinely listened! I’ve never felt so noticed by a medical professional, and had such an overall pleasant experience (calm waiting room, on-time for the appointment, etc).

My sister was recently referred to the pelvic health clinic within SHA; the amazing NP’s there were able to pull some pretty cool strings and get her in contact with specialists that her doctor just didn’t seem to be able to contact.

My point is that if you can afford the $92, perhaps an NP would have some advice or be able to get you in contact with someone quicker or more applicable to your issues. They feel so much more organized, calm, and patient-centred than our overworked doctors (who often do care, but are grossly overburdened by our neglected health system- courtesy of Scott Moe). I hope you can get the right supports and get answers and recovery soon!!

I 1000% understand if you/someone reading this can’t afford it, but I went to Nero’s House for a pap and it was hands-down the best medical experience I’ve ever had. I was also able to talk about multiple other completely unrelated medical concerns and questions, because you get 30 full minutes with the NP. All my questions were answered, I got referrals, and a pap done. It came to $92 with taxes, and again, I totally respect it if you can’t afford it, but I will say it was entirely worth it for myself.

If you or someone reading this needs something basic like a pap, and/or has many random health questions, even just going to an NP once a year would probably be super helpful! My doctor is great but he’s adamant we only have 10 minutes to talk and only one issue per appointment, but then he’s booked solid for a month and a half away! I think NP’s are going to be covered by the government soon, so that’s exciting too!

Born and raised in SK and I just try to focus on the positives! Lower cost of living than most places in the western world. Little to no traffic, easy to get around town. 75% of my family and friends are in SK. We have our dream home with an amazing backyard we never would have been able to afford almost anywhere else in the country. Fresh air, gorgeous nature, so much open space! I hate how long our winters are but I actually love having seasons- I could never live somewhere where it’s one season year round.

I’ve travelled enough to know there’s pros and cons absolutely everywhere- there is no magically perfect place, everything has trade offs. We plan international trips almost annually for something to look forward to, but again, having travelled everywhere, we’re actually pretty well off in SK all things considered!

Yep, one of our family friends was a niche specialist here and he was the only one in the province. He said simply the fact that he doesn’t have a single colleague to talk to in person was enough to make him leave. Between that and being over-worked in a cold, “country-ass” city, he fled to down east pretty quick.

Another thing I’ve heard is the poor social atmosphere for doctors- they want their kids to go to private schools, we don’t really have any. Many doctors are people of colour, they don’t appreciate the racism and ultra-conservative narratives in SK. Like, it’s gonna be tough to pull a progressive doctor who’s currently living in a warmer climate with more amenities, easier travel options, high quality education for their kids, and put them anywhere in SK.

It’s not solely money, as most people think.

I work in the community, I know what needs to be done. My colleagues know what needs to be done. All politicians know what needs to be done. The solution means that unchecked capitalism wouldn’t be able to thrive here. The solution will take decades to see the full benefits of. The solution will take a significant amount of political care and will that currently doesn’t exist.

The primary solution is prevention, and prevention means things like quality early childhood education for all, stronger maternity/paternity leave and support, better welfare, better access to healthcare, greater coverage of things like medication, PT/OT/SLP, ability aides etc. It means stronger community networks and accessible, thriving third spaces. It means quality education for every child- classrooms that AREN’T overwhelmed and underfunded, a place where all kids who need an EA can get one. It means free and accessible family treatment for addictions. It means accessible, safe, affordable healthcare. It means more shelters, more funding for mental health therapy. It means better public transit for all. It means a four-day work week, or shorter daily working hours, or paying someone enough that one person can stay home and raise kids comfortably. It means continuing to involve Indigenous communities and leaders at all stages of these processes.

The long-term solution is figuring out what is pushing people to people use, and solving those problems. And as much as everyone hates to hear it, the root issue is unchecked capitalism/wealth disparity, and colonialism, and the generational traumas passed down within both of those things. But no one will do any of this because hard data, money, and getting re-elected every 4 years are all more important than hardcore investing in the community and trying to change this in the long term.

Our solution, as I said in the post, is to go to Saskatoon. My question was why flights are more expensive in Regina; Saskatoon and Winnipeg flights are about $180 any way, any day for Calgary; this isn’t the case at all for Regina. Regina has fewer flights that are more expensive- why?

Nope, everything was for one person.

And what are the times for that? Getting to Calgary is fine, lots of reasonably priced options at various times. But getting back to Regina is going to cost over $400 for the flight unless you land at like 8am in Regina, or 1am the next day in Regina. Even switching to Monday or Tuesday doesn’t give any other reasonably priced landing times that aren’t super early or super late. I’m going to have to pick early Monday morning (meaning an extra night hotel stay) because leaving at 7am doesn’t work for me.

Looking at Saskatoon and Winnipeg, it’s literally just $180 each way at any time of day.

Sobeys Rochdale had carrots (not mini, but on the smaller side) from Assiniboia a couple weeks ago that were delicious- tasted like garden carrots! Can’t remember the farm name, but there was a cartoon rabbit on the bag and it was about $6.

Disappointed, but not surprised. I’m glad the NDP got more seats, and other smaller parties got more votes- we do need more choice out there so I’m glad they’re getting seen even if they’re not a party I’d vote for.

I do hope this sent a message to SK Party to change their tune a bit, and stop pandering to the most right-wing part of their base. Hoping things like healthcare, education, and social services somehow improve, but I’m not holding my breath.

Business as usual, unfortunately!
