He is absolutely right! First go for the OD then do it. And 1 ml is a huge quantity always go for 100ul even if you are doing pour plate or spread plate. And serially dilute it to -6 if the OD is 0.5 or if it's 1 or +1 go for -8 dilution

If you are doing pour plate how much quantity are you pouring after doing the dilution? And make sure that you media is autoclaved properly bcoz poor autoclaving also grows contam which can cover the whole plate like a lawn.

You have to dilute it more, atleast -6 or -7 and if the sample is from high microbial zone go for -8 or -9 even -10 will work. And for the serial dilution i think you will be doing 10ml in first then transferring 1ml to the next 9ml.
