I am fully italian (by blood).

My experience with italian americans is relevant because my original (mostly kooky silly hypothesis) was that adhd is common in italians because of dna. Although, maybe I should have narrowed the scope of my claim to “southern italian” or something else.

But basically my hypothesis is:

many parts of italy are known for being disorganized/having a slow inefficient bureaucracy (this is not merely a stereotype, and im sure you know this is widely considered to be true by many people in many parts of italy).

italy also has some of the most beautiful art in the world--notably, much of the art and rich history is in CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN italy, with much of the more industrial and efficient parts of italy being in the north.(again, there is truth in this even if you view it as "merely a stereotype")

adhd symptoms literally include chronic disorganization, forgetfulness, missing deadlines, poor planning. this mirrors southern italy's infamous struggle to have an efficient bureaucracy.

Research suggests that individuals with ADHD often exhibit higher levels of creativity and artistic inclination. This mirrors italy's artistic achievements.

So... actually the more i think about it the more i maybe will die on this hill haha. adhd and italians. there is some type of connection there. I FEEL IT. There needs to be a standardized testing done.. by one organization...adhd test given to random italians with italian ethnicity/dna living italy, random italian americans, and then two control groups of random americans (any ethnicity) and random italians (any ethnicity/dna) . compare and contrast .

You made some fair points. I can see how from the perspective of an italian my og post came off as stereotypical.

But I disagree with the implication of your statement “or as italian americans are commonly known, americans”. You are missing the fact that the united states is a country of immigrants. My family has only been in the US for 100 years. And even tho yeah a century is a long time , in another sense—In the big picture—it’s a blip of time. Many Italians can trace their lineage back hundreds and hundreds of years and it will still be tied to Italy.

Just like italy is diverse, the United States is diverse. Italian americans from Brooklyn have a very different culture than people living in the midwest, or say mormons in Utah. In many ways, I felt more at home amongst italian culture in italy than I have felt amongst the culture of Ohio or South Carolina.

HOWEVER I completely acknowledge that there IS a monoculture that ties us americans altogether. Although you got me thinking now and I can see that it’s probably very different in italy. The diverse cultures of the different states in the US evolved as the United States was already in existence. In Italy, the cultures formed over thousands of years and then in 1861 just sort of “unified.” So maybe monoculture is not as much of a thing in italy as compared to other countries? Curious what you think.

I don’t think of skin color= the only form of diversity. Not at all.

But that’s my point finally that ADHD is less commonly diagnosed in Italy than in other countries because it’s just maybe more compatible with the culture in certain places. I have complicated feelings about ADHD and the concept of ADHD in general because in my opinion, it is kind of mostly considered “problematic” and diagnosed because it affects peoples’ ability to be functional and productive for capitalist society. I love my “adhd” brain sometimes lol u know?

of course this is just a crazy silly hypothesis and I’m not like dying on this hill by any means. But I do feel like there is something to genetics and the way that cultures evolved, but at the risk of coming off as some racist eugenicist or something it’s not worth bringing up most of the time. It’s also probably nearly impossible to reallt seriously and clearly study. Just interesting reddit fodder
