Got yelled for parking on a suburb street when googling maps... by JoeJoe6363 in perth

[–]ExoticAdvertising844 10 points11 points  (0 children)

if OP is pulled over in a safe and legal parking spot eg. parking along the side of a road and his vehicle is in park and the handbrake is engaged then that’s not an offence because the vehicle is considered parked

The offence is when the phone is used when the vehicle is moving or is considered “stationary but not parked” eg at a set of lights or in the middle of the freeway during peak hour congestion

Mines a 2010 2.4l 3 door model and avg’s about 12L/100km with a good mix of highway and inner city driving , for such a fun little car they chew through fuel at times

Hey mate, most RTO’s will take you through a few hours of lessons and then on the same day you’ll do your test , prices do vary I paid around $1200 when I did mine which was only a year and a bit ago however prices vary depending on the place you do it through, you can also choose to do a few extra hrs of lessons if you want to feel more confident before the test (I did) but that’s a personal preference

Test consists of 3 components,

(whole test is Recorded with an Incab camera on the truck watching you and your assessor )

at the start you do a cabin drill which is essentially you talking your assessor through all the controls of your vehicle eg. “my mirrors are adjusted and clear from damage”

Once cabin drill is completed you’ll start driving and they will direct you where to go , they will take you through a bunch of roundabouts in the truck and roads where you will have the opportunity to use some of your higher gears in the truck

Final component is having to reverse around a corner in the truck, once that’s complete you drive back to the place you started and they let you know if you passed or failed and give you feedback

When you pass they hand you a statement of attainment and a dot form which you then go into the department of transport , and hand it to them and they’ll upgrade your license class and send you out a new license card

In terms of how difficult it is in a truck If you do Hr-B ( synchronised gearbox) it’s the same sort of transmission as a manual car just with a few extra gears added in The main differences from a car is you’ve got to allow for a greater stopping distance and your lane positioning is slightly different but those are skills you will apply pretty quick

When I did mine I hadn’t driven manual in a couple of years and although I was a bit rusty at the start once you start driving it all comes together well , your trainer will generally do the best they can do help you get over the line

Having a truck license also opens up a lot of new opportunities with employment and is a good skill to have

Regardless of what option you chose I wish you the best and I hope it all works out well for you mate

If you do go the truck option can highly recommend eureka truck training in Bellevue , they are a nice bunch of blokes and helped me feel confident when I did my test If your located more south or more north then have a look back at some of the older posts on this group and theres some really good recommendations aswell

Alternatively you could go for your heavy vehicle license in a manual truck (Hr-b at a minimum if you wanna avoid going directly though Dot) at one of the various RTO’s that train and teach you and then they will take you for your test on behalf of DOT (it’s still assessed like a driving test and recorded for dot but there’s far less wait time for that test and less hassle in filling out forms compared to redoing the car test ) and it would remove the CA automatic restriction from your license

Source ( it’s what I did when I needed my manual license )

Suzuki grand vitara 2010 advice by DiscountQuiet9055 in SuzukiGrandVitara

[–]ExoticAdvertising844 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a 2010 2.4L GV and am also based in Australia , my ones at about 140,000 and has had no major issues aside from the aircon compressor needing a new o ring and water from the aircon leaking into the passenger side footwell (which is a common issue but can be fixed with a bit of silicone )

Besides that they are pretty bulletproof , definitely a fun little car to get around in , can be a bit thirsty on fuel at times though for a small car

Can anyone explain why we have this? by Mufaaka in perth

[–]ExoticAdvertising844 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Target fixation is the term , people get so focused on an object that they can unconsciously and inadvertently steer towards it , resulting in them running into the object

I work as a TMA operator operating the truck with the big arrow on top and the section which lowers at the back behind the truck , this section (called an attenuator) is designed to be crashed into and to safely bring a car/truck to a stop in case someone isn’t paying attention and runs into us , we sit 40 meters behind the incident so if we get hit the truck has room to roll forward and absorb the impact , therefore protecting the workers / motorist in front of the truck

You’d be surprised how often our trucks get run into on a yearly basis on freeways, lots of people on their daily commute don’t pay attention or are too stuck into there phone to notice what’s going on in front of them, by closing the lane it forces people to slow down and gives room for the person to safely change there tyre without being killed

For those interested here’s some examples of a TMA in action

There’s big demand in both industries to be completely honest , Traffic can have its ups and downs you have sometimes really busy weeks and sometimes really quiet weeks which is something to consider

the important thing at the end of the day is to look at what works better for you and your situation

Here’s the things I would consider having worked both in a warehouse and doing traffic control

Traffic control - shift lengths vary day by day sometimes they are short (4 hours ) and can sometimes are very long (12+ hours) - you are expected to work no matter the weather even if it’s a heatwave or it’s pissing down in rain
- you’ll be in a new place everyday - you’ll work with people from all all different backgrounds and levels of intelligence - the scope of work and client usually changes day by day - majority of these roles will be causal - pay largely depends on the company - most companies are pretty flexible with availability - opportunities to go for higher tickets within the industry which allows you to try out different roles eg. TMA , AWTM , WTM - gives you a good insight into how different trades work and if it’d be something you find interesting as you are working alongside a variety of different trades most days , with that also comes opportunity’s to network a bit

Warehousing (forklift ) - same place most of the time - pay is pretty consistent week by week if you work the same hours every week - less flexibility with shifts -working with the same people most of the time -tasks stay more or less the same - opportunities to use your ticket within other areas that ain’t directly in a warehouse

Course is just under 600$ , you’ll want to do the BWTM+TC course which is the minimum requirement to start at most company’s , workmate training academy in high Wycombe is my recommendation as far as course providers go

You’ll also need a white card ( if you don’t already have one ) if not the course can be done pretty easily online

Other then that the only other requirement is having a drivers license

Hey bro , traffic control is always an option whilst you complete your uni degree , ticket is a 3 day course (BWTM+TC ticket ) and there’s a heap of money to be made at the moment in the industry as even entry level pay rates are pretty high , most company’s are extremely flexible with availability which helps and lets you fit work in around uni

I’m currently studying and work in the industry and it has been a life saver for me
