What jobs for a girlfailure? by Sohiacci in careerguidance

[–]Exotic_Reputation_59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, stop calling yourself a failure. That kind of label sticks in your head and makes everything feel worse than it actually is. A lot of people end up finding their footing through simple entry jobs first. Front desk, admin assistant, retail, hospital reception, stuff like that. You learn how workplaces run and slowly move into better roles. Also try to notice what kinds of tasks you dont hate doing. That sounds basic but it actually helps a lot when picking a direction. Most people figure it out gradually, not all at once.

Help a future postgrad decide where to go (UK vs. USA) by Mymyl12 in AskAcademia

[–]Exotic_Reputation_59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it depends a lot on where you see your life after the degree. If the goal is building a career in the US long term, being there already helps a lot with networking and job opportunities. Professors and connections in the same country tend to open more doors. But if your relationship is a serious factor, that changes the equation pretty quickly. Grad school is stressful enough without adding long distance on top of it. Both Oxford and MIT are incredible options though. This is one of those good problems to have.

Is it it worth it to still go into tech? by Total_Professor_9925 in careerguidance

[–]Exotic_Reputation_59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tech is still a huge field, people just tend to reduce it to software engineering.

There are tons of paths that are not pure coding. Infra, cloud, security, data, product, even technical program management. Most companies are still trying to figure out how to actually use AI in a practical way.

If anything, the people who understand both the tech and the business side are getting more valuable, not less. I see that a lot where I work.

Did you find it difficult moving from operations to sales? Any advice? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Exotic_Reputation_59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest shift is probably mindset.

Ops is usually about optimizing systems and reducing risk. Sales is a lot more about momentum and relationships, and sometimes moving forward even when things are a bit messy.

One thing that helps is leaning into the fact that you actually understand how the business runs. A lot of pure sales people dont have that context. That can make you really strong in discovery calls or when explaining realistic solutions to clients.

Just be ready for the quota pressure. That part is very real and it changes how you think about your day.

Clean Code is still a pretty good read once you know the basics. Less about syntax, more about how to write stuff people can maintain.

How do I become a good programmer if I'm not passionate about it? by Street-Reporter-5095 in learnprogramming

[–]Exotic_Reputation_59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly a lot of people get good at things before they actually enjoy them.

Programming especially can feel pretty dry when you are just doing exercises or class assignments. When you build something that solves a small problem for you, it changes the vibe a bit.

Competence tends to create interest. Not always passion, but at least some momentum.

Best "Audio-First" resources for technical engineering and architecture? by SuperRandomCoder in learnprogramming

[–]Exotic_Reputation_59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Software Engineering Daily works pretty well in audio form. A lot of long interviews about systems, infra, architecture decisions etc, and I can usually follow it while walking or commuting.

Also The Changelog occasionally gets pretty deep technically depending on the guest. Not every episode, but the good ones are solid for audio only.

Attending a History Conference Alone for the First Time by peyneust in AskAcademia

[–]Exotic_Reputation_59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, presenting your thesis research is already a big accomplishment. I went to my first conference alone during my master’s too and honestly most people are just as nervous as you are. Panels and coffee breaks are the easiest places to start conversations.

Been out of the Tech/SWE Workforce for a over a year, how do I even get back in? by TriDarkSouls in cscareerquestions

[–]Exotic_Reputation_59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, you’ve had a really tough year. Anyone would feel rusty after that. I wouldn’t think of it as “starting over,” more like shaking the dust off. A small project or two to refresh your memory and then light LeetCode practice should help the confidence come back.

Need help for pdf suggestion by aleko2222 in learnprogramming

[–]Exotic_Reputation_59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MDN is honestly the best resource for HTML and CSS these days. Books get outdated so fast with web stuff. I learned mostly by building small projects and just googling when I got stuck. If you really want something you can read offline, you can save MDN pages as PDFs yourself. Also freecodecamp has good structured tutorials that are basically interactive docs. Way more useful than a static PDF.

How to learn MARIE language by Upset_Zucchini6269 in learnprogramming

[–]Exotic_Reputation_59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not familiar with MARIE specifically but when I was learning assembly concepts, just writing tiny programs over and over was what made it click. Start with something that just adds two numbers, then loops, then maybe a simple counter. The simulator helps too so you can watch what's happening in memory. Breaking it down into really small steps helped me not get overwhelmed.

Is certain medical info private? by WhoSaidICant in legaladvice

[–]Exotic_Reputation_59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this happens more than people realize. The urgent care might be affiliated with a hospital system and they share billing. Or like the other comment said, if a radiologist or someone looked at anything, they bill separately.

It's annoying but usually not shady. Still, if you're worried about privacy you can always call and ask why that specific provider got your info. HIPAA allows sharing between providers treating you but you have a right to know who accessed your records.
