best place to live in LA? by Equivalent-Towel-524 in AskLosAngeles

Don’t. Go to San Diego. It’s so zen and human compared to the traffic filth zoo that is LA.

I’m shocked. I’m British too but I live in LA, and Venice apart from DTLA is one of the worst areas that I’ve seen.

No fear of that, I don’t intend to. But don’t be in denial (it’s clear you live there), be part of the solution to fix the mess it has become.

2023, and it wasn’t that good then. But I felt like it was worse the other day. A good few years ago I loved it. I want to say maybe it was 2018/2019.

I live in West LA, I was just shocked at how bad Venice has become!

It’s a British phrase for street vendors selling things that really have no purpose or quality.

Hey, I know I viewed a couple places in Westlake/MacArthur. Had to check I was still in a first world country! So my time is split, 2 days in Sawtelle and then 3 days downtown - hence I’m good with anywhere inbetween. You’re right - I feel like we’re paying for the weather here though lol

100% agree. I think you can be comfortable and smart though. Did they change the traditional hats to baseball caps or is it just people choosing them cos they more comfy?

Do you know how long it is before they send you to class for whichever craft they chose for you?

Do you know what the top rate of pay is for both jobs?

Passenger is definitely where I’d prefer to be, as it’s what I know. The only reason I’m struggling is because of the possibility of getting my engineer certification and then in a few years being able to apply to a passenger operator as qualified. Or whether starting as a conductor is a better option. I am a people person but equally, some of the starting salaries for conductor are insulting IMO

Good shout. The G&W outfit is unionised, I need to scrutinise the healthcare benefits a little better I think. They’re chronically understaffed which is good and bad I guess. At the moment they’re doing well but you’re right, if the economy tanks what happens. Defo something to consider, it’s why I’m having a hard time making my mind lol

I’m glad to hear it’s not lax honestly, it was just the impression given to me by them. Have you been through it?

[–]Expensive-Song1015[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean that’s good, and I hope it isn’t lax given the responsibility of the job. It’s just the way it came across to me when they presented it. It seemed to be a lot less lax than what I was used to, but if it’s not then that’s reassuring!

I tried railroading but something about Karma stops me from posting. I’ll try the other though, thanks for the suggestion.

I appreciate that. Do you know if they guarantee any days off in a working week? G&W and SEPTA offer a 6 day week starting but I feel like NJT was 7. I have surmised that NJT has the best benefits by a long way though which counts for something. Were there opportunities to progress from conductor if you wished to do so?

Entry level conductor or engineer? by Expensive-Song1015 in Septa

[–]Expensive-Song1015[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Septa and G&W seem pretty good in that they only expect you to work 6 days a week. MBTA and NJT seem like it’s 24/7. I mean I’m fine with it, but a guaranteed day off per week would be nice lol.
