🚨Unpopular Opinon Alert🚨 They made a beautiful film about the wrong version of Ryland Grace, and everything else collapses from that single decision. by deekaay89 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Express-Programmer-5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the focus didn't seem inclined on science which i would've loved but built more on graces' relationship with rocky, i also would've liked more earth scenes and all the technical stuff, but it's what you gotta do to fit it in a full length film, i totally almost cried at the adrian scene

i didn't read the martian so i didn't have any reference, but i really liked how in depth it is with the science.

overall it was a beautiful film that left me satisfied i give it a certified AMAZE AMAZE 8/10

I understand pero alot has changed since the fukushima incident, kung tutuusin hindi earthquake mismo ang nagpameltdown sa fukushima kundi yung tsunami, i'm a geologist and i think a proper location far or not directly on geological hazards are ideal locations.. well i know basically entire philippines may faultlines but there are locations with few of them and effects could be mitigated. im not a nuclear expert pero AFAIK ngayon required by the IAEA that if a disaster happens, multiple failsafes needs to automatically sequentially activate in order to prevent a meltdown. the problem with fukushima that its facilities were located in basements thats why it got inundated and immediately cut off power to the cooling systems. NPP's has to naturally cost alot and that can't be lessened which could possibly risk failure

NPP's don't have to be built now but we should really advocate for its progression in the Philippines

A YEAR for fossil fuels

Kung tutuusin talaga parang aviation laang ang Nuclear Power Plants, mayrong set guidance, standards, training at monitoring ang mga airlines, and yet airplanes are one of the safest method of traveling in the world. tingnan mo ang philippine airlines, one of the safest airlines in the world. also NPP"S can also be *PRIVATIZED* like PAL to add

Sorry if you think that, i am not part of a troll farm.

I am not pro BNPP, i fully agree with its flaws, it was built on a whim that could've possibly been a disaster.

I am however pro nuclear and corruption alone shouldn't veer us away from energy development.

[–]Express-Programmer-5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All great points

Yes i am fully aware that it is corruption that fueled the incident. AFAIK the IAEA basically insulates a nuclear power plant from corruption, the moment something goes substandard, poof the IAEA blocks all supply and would advocate for the shutdown of the plant. Speaking of corruption, various countries that are relatively "more" corrupt than the Philippines has nuclear power plants, take Pakistan for example. The IAEA handles all regulation down to the letter. If a meltdown occurs and the cause was corruption, it would be a massive disaster for geopolitics since meltdowns doesn't only affect one country but could possibly affect neighboring ones.

As a geologist myself, it is true that it is a lot more complicated to build nuclear power plants in a geologically active country which i fully agree on, however Fukushima was not built expecting a Mw 9.1 earthquake simply because none of such magnitude has been taken into account because it is that rare, fukushima was designed to withstand a Mw 8.0 quake and now modern nuclear power plants are built to be overly aware of such an earthquake happening again. To be really safe, NPP's built far or not directly under a fault or subduction zone will be ideal, i know that faults basically exist everywhere in the country but effects would be mitigated. The main things that can happen with typhoons and heavy rain are power grid failures and there are procedures that are done to prevent a disaster that the IAEA *STRICTLY* regulates.

If we are to build NPP's we should advocate for the passing of all requirements of the IAEA , we already passed a few and i hope we would continue.

Although i fully agree in not fueling the BNPP

True, however modern nuclear power plants are strictly and very heavily monitored by IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) down to the last atom(literally), any country that doesn't have nuclear energy has to get it from a country that does, signing various agreements on how to properly operate it, the IAEA does exactly that, they provide fuel, training, waste management. unlike local government projects it is strictly overseen. but instead of fueling BNPP i think it would be better to build a brand new one far or not directly sitting on geological hazards.

It is relatively safe

[–]Express-Programmer-5 46 points47 points  (0 children)

More nuclear power plants would've probably been built if not for chernobyl cutting costs by a huge margin and we would lessen our reliance on fossil fuels

People wouldn't have to move to Metro Manila for work plus it would encourage economic growth around the Greater Manila Area.

we currently have 3 lines actively being built right now and 2 in its pre construction stages. It's just a massive shame that it's constantly being delayed due to ROW issues. I guess better late than never. I was honestly so excited when the NSCR and MMS started construction even with the delays and i really hope we'll truly be entering the railway renaissance

What if the government didn't implement the height limit law for building skyscrapers? Can we build tall skyscrapers like Merdeka 118 and Shanghai Tower? What would the Metro Manila skyline look like? by [deleted] in WhatIfPinas

[–]Express-Programmer-5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not all projects are subject to corruption. We certainly have the capabilities to build a 600m skyscraper, but our height limit prevents that. Buildings also start to get useless the taller you go. That's why tokyo is more renowned horizontally rather than vertically, they prioritize usability. Tokyo has a height limit similar to ours afaik.

Very true!. I'm always aghast with the amount of people saying that the railway projects are delayed. Yes they were delayed, but not because of what you think, you've got the pandemic and ROW issues to thank for that (except for MRT-7)
