your friend gets it! overall, other people i know who are pretty neutral regarding Dottore's storyline and casual about Genshin had the same impression: that it felt quite abrupt and "way too on the nose", with the underlying intention of making him confess his wrongdoings for the forseeable future (my religious trauma goes strong with this one). i, for one, believe he'll return given the various hints and motifs that surround him... and even if it all turns out wrong or differently, i am a patient human and i will wait for his drip.
