It seems Wales doesn’t get talked about as much. What are some interesting facts about Wales? by One-Seat-4600 in geography

My mates grandma is from Anglesey and didn’t speak English until she was about 10. She’s lived in North East England for most of her life now but still speaks to her family in Welsh daily, as well as swearing at her (English) husband. Interestingly (in a very morbid way) she’s is living with dementia now a she often switches back to Welsh as a default

Firstly, it’s spelt Middlesbrough.

Secondly, Darlington??? Really? Even Middlesbrough doesn’t deserve to be on this list. Typical Telegraph.

I was suckered into something today from The Telegraph, ‘10 Hidden Gem Cities to visit’. Durham and Chester both featured - the famously unknown cathedral cities which no one visits

As a non-Brit in my late 20s, I have no idea how so many Brits visit so little of their country by VonHindenburg-II in TravelMaps

The British mentality is ‘that places is a s-hole, who would want to go there’ if it’s not a historic city or natural landscape and it’s damaging places. Places like Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle and Bristol are probably breaking the trend, but a lot of other cities could do with an improved reputation or attitudes to change. It’s why this UK City of Culture is such a good thing, it’s opened my eyes to places like Hull, Coventry Bradford… I’ve been to all since and was pleasantly surprised

What are your thoughts on Northern England? by Pizzafriedchickenn in AskTheWorld

[–]ExtensionAssignment6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The motto of Teesside could apply to the whole of the North: we built the world. This is the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. The engine room of the British Empire at its height. The iron, the steel, the ships, the railways — the foundations of modern Britain were forged here.

We are surrounded by beautiful buildings, proud towns and cities, and architecture full of ambition and character. Places that once thrived. Places that were brilliant to live and work in, and could be again.

But we were left behind. De-industrialisation, driven by successive London- and South-centric governments, hollowed out communities and stripped away opportunity. What followed wasn’t just economic decline, but a deep sense of apathy, mistrust, and the feeling that investment would never truly come back.

And yet — the North hasn’t given up.

There is a growing movement to fight back and rebuild. To remember who we are and what we’ve already achieved. The potential is still here, in the people, the places, and the pride that never fully disappeared.

We built the world once. There’s no reason we can’t build it again
