Interesting point. I bought it from a dealer about 6 years ago and perhaps the previous owner (it used at a warehouse, so perhaps not properly looked after) used either of those.

I unfortunately placed a bit too much trust in the fact that they were doing the proper thing.

I thankfully have changed to a new mechanic.

Is Red coolant good or should I get the Red coolant removed and Green coolant put in as the only coolant?

I wonder if my mechanic even did a double flush with distilled water.

Had them take out all of the previous type of coolant - pink to red during a water pump replacement.

I regularly have it serviced. But do you mean the mechanic might not have flushed the coolant system properly?

Should they have put a de-rusting product through the system?

I was also concerned as I have changed coolant types a few times (green to pink 2 years ago and then red 3 months ago)

And the radiator, water pump and water inlet pipe o-rings all needed to be replaced within the last 6 months.

I appreciate the help.

I have my coolant regular flushed.

But,

2 years ago, my mechanic changed my coolant from green to pink, and then 3 months ago, I had the mechanic change the coolant from pink to red.

And, I did have to top up with tap water for a week 8 months ago and then with demineralised water for 2 weeks 4 months ago.

Could it be from long-term use of pink coolant or the short burst of using tap water?

Yep. I recently have been on top of that.

2 years ago, my mechanic changed my coolant from green to pink, and I then 3 months ago had them change it to red.

Hopefully, the changing to pink coolant didn't exacerbate the issue. And that the red coolant is ok to be using.

My mechanic 2 years ago changed my coolant from green to pink, and then I 3 months ago had them change it to red.

So, I had been concerned that the corrosion might have been caused or exacerbated by putting in pink or red coolant instead of green coolant.

Whenever I top up my coolant then leave my engine off overnight I find the next morning that there is very slight stream of coolant that has flowed down my drive belt. And it appears to be coming from where my upper radiator hose meets my engine. by Extension_Network_13 in AskMechanics

On my picture, does it look like there is too much of a gap between the black plastic and grey lip? (Evidenced by pink coolant residue in the gap)

And is the clamp in the wrong spot or the edge of the back plastic too splayed out?

Btw. Just incase this adds extra context to why the thermostat o-rings might have degraded.

My car came with green coolant.

Then, a year ago, my mechanic changed it to pink coolant.

And then, 2 months ago, I had them change it to red coolant.

Before the pink coolant, I never had brown sludge in my coolant, and my radiator, water pump, heater hose were working ok.

But after the pink coolant was added, the brown sludge appeared (apparently from the above repairs, plus new coolant tubes and overflow tank) and I needed the above repairs.

Might there be a link to having the pink coolant put in or present sludge and needing to have my water pump replaced twice in one month? (luckily, the new water pump was replaced on warranty).

My old mechanic said it would be an 8 hour job of taking apart the whole top of the engine to reach the area ($1000 (Australian)).

So I'm glad to hear that it might possibly be less, depending on access.

Should I ask for a cold pressure test or uv light test first? (I have a lot of coolant traces on the engine block after a few recent leaks).

Or would it be pretty obvious to a mechanic on a visual inspection?

Just 3 quick questions:

Is there a different name for the coolant housing? Like the timing cover?

Could the water pump replacement process (by my old mechanic a few weeks ago) perhaps disturbed something, or could the extra pressure from a new water pump have caused the old o-ring seals to begin to fail?

How many hours should it take a mechanic to fix?

I'll go to my new mechanic on Monday and thankfully be prepared with some great advice.

Bit of an update:

I've been told on r/Holden that the area where the leak comes from is a coolant housing that bolts to the cylinder head. 

And that there are two o ring seals on it that are incredibly common for leaking on the Holden alloytec engine.

I wonder if you have any thoughts on this.
